Nicky Bailey

Since he has gone to Middlesborough I haven't heard anything special about him, Anyone know how he is getting on? Presume he is just on the bench or moved to another club on loan? And if we do get promoted, do we want to re-sign him??

  • Don't think I'd re-sign him, we are pretty strong in that area and assuming there were limited funds available we could probably spend them in more pressing positions.

According to a mate who's a Boro' fan he's played well all season. Shifted to being a defensive midfielder and seems to have made the position his own. Is out injured for another few weeks.
  • My old housemate is a Boro fan.

He sent me a lot of abuse when he first joint them, usual rubbish, but has said that this season he's really turned it around and a real crowd fav. He said early problem was he was billed as a free scoring midfielder to the fans which he isn't just had a good record of arriving late in the box and drifting in off the far post, if you get alot of balls in the box he will mop up and put a few away but they weren't and he wasn't.

    Was Captain for a while.
  • Doing well this season

Their form dipped when he got injured.
  • He'd like to come back to London at some point............and preferably Charlton at a guess.
Know he felt he'd let us and himself down on that fateful night and that he's got unfinished business with us.

Is he a Chris Powell type of player though?

Good player but I wouldn't drop any of our first choice midfield for him now. Good off the bench though.

He'd be absolutely bloody bang on the money then.
  • He'd have to learn to curb his tendency to play long passes / balls every time he got the ball though, although maybe that was how Parky wanted us to play back then.
  • As good as he is, he wouldn't simply walk back into the side now, that's for sure.

Spoke to a Boro fan yesterday, he said exactly this. He's a bit pessimistic about Boro at the moment, says they can play away OK but are bad at home.

  • I still live in fear that that penalty he took is going to come back down one day and kill me
  • i suppose 1/we associate him with a period of failure .for me he did so many good things (scored good goals from midfield) but failed sometimes to do the basics eg pass to a team mate in a better position .never quite sure what his best position was i wish him well and he seems to come across well on the box but as they say ...never go back

(unless you are our great and wonderous leader)
  • One thing I disliked about Bailey in his time with us, was his complaining to the ref. Any time he got tackled, he'd spend more energy moaning and trying to get a free kick than trying to win the ball back.
  • Mowbray commented recently on Bailey's injury: 'we will miss him, he's been a foundation stone of the team this season' , or words to that effect .. I don't think that Uncle Tony was saying that Nicky is as thick as a brick
  • Bailey was hugely overrated. Scored goals, looked committed, but was an awful captain and a big reason why we went down and failed to come back up again. When things were going wrong he spent his time blaming and berating his team mates rather than pulling the team together, even when he'd given the ball away himself.

Boro can keep him. We've moved on, and I wouldn't swap any of our midfielders for him now.
  • As per comments above, I understand that he has been a vital player for them this season.

Nothing compared to Robbo, and didn't stop him becoming an absolute legend.

Think he was simply trying too hard to create something. Racon and Semedo aren't creative players themselves and we had no goalscorer up front.

Seems he's mainly a defensive midfielder at Boro and keeps it simple more often with that being his job in their team.
  • I always found it odd when people claimed he was an attacking midfielder. Yes he did score goals but I thought he was at least a box to box midfielder or maybe even a defensive one. His goals were almost incedental. Real midfield terrior type who will always get stuck in.

He struggled with us as he was constantly having to make up for the poor form aroudn him. I would like to have seen what he could do in a good team brimming with confidence like we have now.

Not convinced he wouldn't be better than what we have - don't forget he still plies his trade in the league above so its hard to make a true comparison.
  • Good player for us, in mediocre company. Personally I thought he was a bit too inclined to cheat. Bit of an injury feigner sometimes, and I don't like to see that from our players.

What sort of player is Racon then? I'm yet to find out.

I'd play Bailey alongside Hollands. Excellent midfielder IMO.
  • I always really liked Bailey. Knew how to find the net and can't help but think if he was with us now he would be a better player as he wouldn't have to play long ball.

But i don't miss him and if he came back he wouldn't be our best centre mid.

My best mate is his brother in law.

He now play's defensive midfield week in week out. However he's having problem's with his knee's and he's had to have an operation that's kept him sidelined for 8 week's.

  • Earned plaudits by being a moderately decent player in an utterly shite Charlton team.

He's one of those players who provokes the old cliche, ''If Nicky Bailey is the answer, you're asking the wrong question''.
  • Steep learning curve for him at Boro in the Championship, despite being probably our best player in our Champs relegation year.

But he's stuck to his task and earned the right to be very highly regarded now at Boro.

We've moved on and much improved - but to be fair, so has he.
    Good luck to the player.

  • Was a good signing for us, and a Hollands/Bailey combo would be pretty good in the Championship, never mind L1 But the memories of the Swindon game still linger, and his generally wind-up attitude got on my nerves- 'fraid I don't subscribe to the "he plays for us, so it's OK" view
