Was the ball dead though? Had it not just been cleared and play was ongoing?
To clarify my point: A team has a corner (or even a penalty!) at one end of the pitch and an incident happens at the other end in the penalty area. Does the referee pick the ball up and walk the length of the pitch and place the ball on the spot? Of course not!
If the ball is in play, the game is re-started at the place the offence occurred. Or penalty kick if the offence occurred in the box.
It doesn't matter where the ball is, providing it is in play.
I suppose we will have to wait to see - or maybe not - what CAFC Player shows up later on.
I have seen penalties given for violent conduct when the ball is being contested in the box (elbows to the head etc), but not when the ball has been cleared from the area.

I don't understand this. If the ball is in play the free kick is awarded where the offence took place and if that was for violent conduct in the penalty area then it's a penalty simples no?
It would depend on the video and, given the fact that it was not a TV match then there may be no video available of the incident, probably not if the usual CAFC Player quality of coverage is anything to go by.
The Referee and his Assistan Referee's called it as they saw it and it will hard to change that.
All games are recorded and submitted to the FA for evaluation. The assistants would also give written evidence of what they saw.
It does seem that, theoretically at least, a referee could be in a position where he could justify giving a penalty at either end - ie if one team is attacking in the opposition box and their player is fouled while at the same time, another of their players strikes an opponent in their own box. Presumably it would depend on which offence the ref deems to have happened first?
Very interesting you say the decision was wrong - because I admit we were all surprised at the decision at the time though the opposition happily accepted it. They were a decent standard of officials (the game was in the old Metropolitan League. Maybe the referee just turned a blind eye to the ball being out of play in the interests of natural justice. Their centre half was a bit of animal (though he almost started walking the moment the punch landed).
I ought to know the answer because I took my referee exams but what is the correct action for the referee to take.
I have seen a pretty clear video of the incident, straight after the game last night, it is clear to me that Kermo trips/kicks Mackenzie, that is what Mackenzie reacted to, we got lucky.
Kermogant kicked Mckenzie (a bit Beckham like), whilst Kermy was on the ground & McKenzie was standing. When Kermy got up McKenzie grabbed Kermy round the throat & pushed his forehead against Kermy.
McKenzie had to go & as others have said could/should have already been off for 2 previous offences.
Kermy should have got a yellow for the original kick.
It's funny what people actually see. Mckenzie actually fell to the ground after clearing the ball. He grabbed Yanns leg as he ran away. McKenzie for some reason was still fuming and did a little stumble as he got up and went head to head with Yann. McKenzie moved his head forward which in my book means he was the aggressor. He then grabbed Yann round the neck but pretended it was some sort of hug. The linesman saw all this which is why when the ref radioed through to him McKenzie got a straight red and Yann nothing. McKenzie may well apologies

there were a lot of people and cameras on the tv gantry last night, more than the usual one person with a cheap camera, so there would be better pictures than normal
I saw Kermit kick him and immeditaely thought that when the ref rushed over Yann was going off, I'd be very surprised (but disappointed) if the FA didn't look into it.
Said for some time that clearly Kermit is an a***hole on the pitch. 1 of those players that would be booed & taunted at every away ground he goes to for his antics but, as he is our player, he is ok & we all love him. If & when he ever moves I may change my opinion!!
I know that teams get a win bonus and one for clean sheets and goals scored but is there a special one for getting opponents sent off? And what is so appealing about Yann's neck that first Beattie and now McKenzie want to grip it?
For those not at the game, the ball was clearly in play as Dons were clearing a corner. Even if the FA got involved and Yann was suspended (which I doubt) it wouldn't be the worst thing to happen as we have backup.
If Kermo gets a ban it will be pretty well-deserved. I like him & he has been a great signing, but he is not exactly Mr Fairplay. That's been obvious for a while though, so McKenzie really is a fool for allowing himself to get suckered like that.
I wonder whether his first yellow might have been a red, &/or whether this was a deliberate attempt to wind Kermo up. Pleased to say such tactics are backfiring. Same when the Sheff Wed guy clattered into Morrison early on at Hillsborough - all it did was signal to the ref "we are dirty" - net result was loads of free kicks to us.
As legaladdick says we have alternatives, and maybe it's time to give Hayes a runout, to see if he can re-start BWP if nothing else
Didn't think we got lucky at all, Kermogant reacted to being fouled in the penalty area and did not like the 'assault' earlier on the sideline. Did not see him kick out, but saw the MK Dons player get up, nut him and get him in a headlock, prentending it was a cuddle. Just before the second half I noticed that Jackson was taking to Kermogant who made a throttling gesture and a headbutt, then shrugged his shoulders. Probably saying what he thought of the incident. Nothing for the FA to review as nothing will be mentioned in the report and MK Dons will not appeal.
Clearly opposition players love Big Yann as much as us, because they wanting to give him a cuddle/tenderly caress his manly neck parts....
Like many have said on here, he is the kind of player that would drive you nuts if he was playing for the other side...but he isn't and we all think he's great (because he is).
He has been a game changer for us on many occasions this season....and on a free transfer too. Bargain or what? Well done CP!

Any other offence would presumably have occurred after the ref had stopped play, regardless of whereabouts on the pitch.
