Freemasonry

  • I think the ceremony is linked to the robes. When a member dies, a robe is freed up. If you are the right size, willing to adopt a set of somebody elses rules, haven't got many friends, are pretty unsuccessful generally and need to belong to something to give you hope - you're in. (truth is, i don't know but thats the thing with secrets, speculation is rife)
Just to put things into perspective:

Think about a church wedding in England.
The brides family sit in a certain place - the groom's on the other side.
the bride wears a veil and carries a posy
The bride's father walks her to the altar and a vicar moves her hand across to her new husband
The vicar reads out a load of stuff.
He asks if anyone knows of any impediment - rarely does anyone speak.
The actual marriage is not complete until the couple sign the book etc,
    Then the sex life ceases
  • There are women's Lodges.
I'm not angry, just amused. You don't know how many times I have heard the drink driving story. It is something Freemasons find amusing...
  • Anyone know a good place to sell my old regalia?

Some of it was handed down to me so would rather it went to a good home.
  • A Mason who got a dd charge dropped. ,! I can assure you that as well as being a drunk, he was also a liar. Masons who do business together have no commercial nous as to do business with someone just because he is a member of your lodge is ridiculous. I am a member of a printers lodge. Those who have joined for business reasons have soon left. Those who join to find some wonderful secret also soon leave. I do business with those who have something to offer me, not someone from the bloody golf club.....As previously stated, lots of crap spoken about what is only an amateur dramatic society that can give both charity and friendship. Anyone who claims to get some financial gain is a liar.
masicat.....I can tell this has made you pretty angry and of course there's just no way I can prove this but I knew this fella and his family really well back in those days.......would see him four or five nights a week, he also owned a pub in Soho.
Can only say that this is perfectly true, as unsavoury as you might like to think...... it honestly happened.
You're just going to have to take my word for it......sorry!

Even if the person/people responsible for having the case dropped were masons, it is entirely possible that they were also genuine mates of your fella and simply did it to help a friend out. Or are you suggesting that no member of a masonic lodge is ever charged with a criminal offence?

There are a lot of conspiracy theories about the masons and I dare say some of them are true in some sense but I think we also have to accept that a lot of them are a load of old bollocks.

Well I know some of the people he did back then and I 'know' what took place. I know how utterly broken a man he was for a week or two.....it looked like he'd lose his license.....but miraculously it all turned around.

I know of people who have been up on charges for one thing or another and have got off with it...........They're NOT Freemasons?
  • Rizzo......that may well be true......all I/we know is that the charges were dropped.
And no I don't think that Masons are 'generaly' above the law.......like everyone else, they do get nabbed from time to time.
  • Why would a woman want to become a Freemason?
Same reason as men I would guess.
  • I know quite a few Masons but none of them have ever asked me to join......
Have you been to the river in speedo's that's my plan tonight!
  • No to Fez, but your question says more about you than any sarcastic comment I could make.
Musta hit a nerve :( ooops

  • As previous. Everything can be researched online with Wikipedia being a good place to start. The United Grand Lodge website is also informative.http://www.ugle.org.uk/
If you have any outstanding fines or criminal convictions please note you have to be a member for at least 5 years before you can get them quashed. If you are a builder it will also be a couple of years before another Lodge member holding local government purse strings will give you loads of contracts because you have a funny handshake and roll your trousers up. Freemasonry has been very disappointing for some, and very worthwhile for others. Again, without repeating, those who expect something are always disappointed. In fact, best you don't do any business for anyone in your lodge as it could come back to bite you. Imagine a copper swinging someone off a dd charge. A couple of years down the line there is a falling out, the lucky recipient now has the hump and decides the copper needs to be taught a lesson. Said copper loses job, pension, reputation and probably goes to prison. Ask yourself, would you risk that for a bloke at your local golf club? Ridiculous...

just as an example of what we do, at yesterdays meeting my lodge voted in favour of donating £1000 to various local and masonic charities. I wouu normally have stayed for a couple of beers and a decent dinner, but chose instead to leave straight after the meeting get to The Valley. Not sure I made the right choice!!
  • Why would a woman want to become a Freemason?

Apparently there are lots of "big knobs" there?
  • That's handy, no need to cut and paste, just click on the link.

I didn't miss it the first time it was posted, big of you to post it again, from behind a stupid name and no photo though gilbert. Well done!

    Thank you.

That is a most interesting website. Far more candid than I'd expected.

  • Got told about this thread after the game last night. Fantastic reading.

I do know what the Funny Handshake is, but if Del Boy got black balled, then no chance for the likes of myself.
