It does show a lack of imagination to keep on using the same tune but different words. Society really is dumbing down
I'm not sure it's really dumbing down is it? More like fragmentation of popular culture due to the huge array of choices we have. It's getting harder and harder to find a tune that will be familiar to people of all generations. That and the fact that the youngsters that are more likely start songs, spend their days listening to tuneless carp. Yeah, you're right AUN we are dumbing down; at least the youngsters are ;-)
Gumbo - ridiculous. We have to listen to that incessant tune for much of every game we watch, be it Charlton or games on the telly. How on Earth would not singing along help? AddickUpNorth is right.
I don't mind the BWP version so much, because it was one of the first versions I heard. But the use of that tune for every message the fans want to share is getting really irritating.
Jimmy 85 so you like th BWP song because it about a player that play for our club, but dont like the tune! maybe you so copyright the song then NO fan from other clubs could sing that tune.......
I agree would be even better if had more variation but it seems to create a good atmosphere among are fans at the match for the games i have attended this season, so who cares really.
The point is there does need to be a bit more imagination with regard to tune and content. I am one of the few fans standing in the east stand who sings Red Robin when the players come on not because its a great song (it isn't) but because its our song and if everyone sang more(in the east stand) the place would surely become a fortress(I mean remember what it felt like at Fulham and that was a 4-0 defeat). Also songs about Jackson, morrison have started but havent taken off because the covered end are not getting together enough. No blame attached to anyone but I would sing anything without swearing in it (The solly song wont catch on as a result)

I think the trouble with the Jackson song is that he cuts inside more than running down the wing. The lyrics just ain't true. How about, "Johnnie, Johnnie Jackson curls in free kicks for me..."?
