does fly in the face a bit when supporters groups get asked by the club to raise similar sums for things that the club supposedly can't afford.
Disagree mate, we are in a position of privilege with our fanbase who are generous enough and big enough (and happy enough it would seem) to help out when we can. I love the fact we as fans our asked to contribute and it makes me feel we are part of the club in a way most modern Man utd/ Chelsea fans will never know.
A tin pot club like Margate probably dont have that luxury with most down there "supporting" big premiership clubs and so that cash will probably pay a weeks wages for all the squad and staff whereas we'd take that in jackpot tickets in an afternoon.
Plus it's good PR and nice to see in the modern "sod the underdogs and show me the money" era that a club like ours is still willing to make a gesture like this.

Palarse or the spanners?
RCT nails it for me. It was effectively a reserve game for us. Supaclive told me who the real owners are and they can afford a few yen so no big deal.
