Ryanair London Tyneside Airport

edited February 2012 in General Charlton
So late night flight from Krakow to Stansted with Ryan air, 46 schoolchildren in my group having studied the holocaust for the weekend, 2 aborted landings (as in wheels down, cabin lights dimmed and stewards seated awaiting landing) and then we end up at Newcastle Airport, who were not expecting us and no Ryanair staff in sight! 2 hours later and I managed to secure a coach to get us back and we arrived back at Stansted for 09:00 eleven hours late...still no contact or sign of Ryanair via email, call or staff member at any stage!

I know you get what you pay for and at least we made it back but hard take given the weather conditions in Poland being worse when we took off than when we landed....

At least I can make the rearranged Rochdale game so every cloud has a snowy lining and all that...any one top that for a trying weekend?

  • Hate that company with a passion. That man has no scruples, he wouldn't have been out of place running 't mill in Victorian times. A real modern day Mr. Scrooge.

Contact the press and make as much stink as possible
  • Unfortunately you get what you pay for. This might sound harsh but you have a choice whether to fly with Ryanair or a more reputable company.
Flew with Paddyair once and vowed never to give that company any more of my hard earned cash.
  • Terrible Company, flew from Spain on the one and only time with them. The flight was 2 hours late, there was no water so the toilets were in an awful state.Couldnt have a hot drink and they had not cleared up from the previous flight.I only travel first class now with decent operators.
  • The thing is, unless you get one of the first few seats that are sold at the cheapo prices, are they any cheaper than 'normal' operators? Not in my exprience. You might save a few quid on fares but by the time you have cabbed it to make a 7am take off, cabbed it at the other end because the airport they use is 40 miles from the city it claims to serve and paid extra to check a bag, use a debit card etc etc you might as well as done the midday flight on BA.
  • reminds me of the song "cheap flights" by Fascinating Aida............
  • Bunch of bog hopping tw*ts, and that aint an'I' thats missing. Would never even consider 'em.

You watch the bloke being interviewed and don't ya just want to punch him?

Yeh they are generally. Maybe not if you book last minute but it is much much cheaper still on the whole. Which is why people continue to use Ryanair despite moaning about it. They take the piss with the extra card charges etc etc which I think is disgraceful but it is still much cheaper and as sralan says you get what you pay for. its not luxury travel but for short haul flights to europe its f*cking good value. I have been to Berlin, Amsterdam and others for less than 40 quid return, Dublin for TWO QUID return and Stockholm for less than 20quid return. And personally I have only had one late flight, about 40minutes. The Stockholm airport was 60 miles away from the city but it was actually a really easy changeover onto a bus which got you into the city centre in 1 hour for about 10quid return.

They ain't customer service specialists and clearly the pricing stuff is confusing etc but personally in my experience theyve been really good value

  • Regularly use Easy Jet and Ryanair to Valencia; treat it like a bus with no expectations given the low prices; on the whole EJ better but having made about forty flights in the last four years have never been let down.
  • I only travel first class now with decent operators.
    Get you.
  • Touch wood I've never had problems with Easyjet or Ryanair. As above, treat it like a fast moving bus.

  • Don't like Ryanair of all the budget airlines I have used but as already said these airlines are budget for a reason. When things are ok then fine but as soon as there is a problem they don't have the backup to resolve issues quickly or that efficiently. Wizzair and Air Berlin are the best of the budgets IMHO. Wouldn't want to do a long haul on Ryanair. Treat them as busses and you won't be too disappointed.
  • My god I wish there was a Ryanair type company operating in Canada, we are absolutely & completely shafted by the two main domestic airlines here - Westjet & Air Canada.

A return flight from Calgary to Vancouver (1 hour each way) will set you back a minimum of 300quid (if you are prepared to take very early/very late flights) - more like 400-500quid if you want to fly at a decent hour.

The service is good, but the cost is truly astronomical.

  • Ryan air always have been a complete joke, from their shite customer service to the distance from the town centre the airports they use.Rubbish.
  • I've flown with them over 50 times (work and travelling). Never had a problem with them other than the odd delay, which they can't really be blamed for. Honestly, what do people expect? I've flown to places a 1000 miles away for less money than it costs to get a train from sevenoaks to London Bridge. I honestly can't fathom how people can moan about it.
  • once on a late night flight from Cork to Stansted the tower told the pilot that he had to divert as our plane couldn't be seen in fog. Ended up in Birmingham.Coach to Stansted. No fog.
  • I'm with Leroy on this, never had a problem with them. I do get a bit confused why people moan about the airports they use, if they don't fly to somewhere you want to go the solution is fairly simple don't use them and book with someone else.

Completely agree. Used them loads of times and never had a problem.
  • An alternative to Stensted- Krakow would be to fly to Katowice from Luton by Wizzair. I have used them a few times to Eastern Europe and never had a hint of a problem.

I knew what to expect when I booked them and it was cheap, tbh if I had booked BA first class I would still have ended up in Newcastle last night, the thread was a more selfish story of "my journey"as they say on x-factor as opposed to a whinge session. Would have been nice to hear from them though, it was the look on the staff at Newcastles face when we all arrived in customs lounge, they thought the last flight had gone through for the night, when they heard we were the first of nine inbound flights it was chaos.

It was the airport that arranged the buses and the duty manager said "we will sort t out with the airline next week when it all settles down"

As pointed out the customer services are not their best quality but cheap travel probably is

Printing off 40+ boarding passes before we left without incurring any financial penalties was as ardous as the trip down from Newcastle!

I only travel working class with anyone that can knock a few quid off.

  • Well i won't go near Ryanair - although they dont fly London-Prague anyway. I dont like WizzAir either. Never trust an airline whose aircrew laugh through the safety demo. I like GermanWings and Norwegian, and have heard good things about Air Berlin too. I always choose BA to London if the price is OK though

Agree about Easyjet. I use them a lot to fly to sweden and spain. i cant understand my partners family that fly SAS to manchester for twice the price of Easyjet. it's a 90 minute flight so whats the point. Worst i've had from the cheapies was when the volcano grounded the fights in rome and had to get own way home, as did many others.
  • I will no longer fly ryan or the orange mob, both con artists.

For me I like Monarch never had any issues with them & you can book extra leg room at reasonable costs

Use Easyjet a lot, consistently the cheapest, one delay in around 20 flights. Pretty good stats.
  • to give you an indication of how much of a rip off most of these companies are - i once flew to Toronto Canada with Thomas Cook and a flight with the same company to Vancouver (which is about the same length again from london to toronto) and it was only 20 quid more. Good deal or showing they don't actually need to charge that much?
  • If you look at price breakdown a very high percentage is taxes and landing fees etc.
  • Don't like ryanair and have vowed not to fly them again, had no problem with easyjet though and flying to alicante with them at Easter.

You're right about taxes and fees though. Flying ba to philly this week, fare is 86 quid, fees and taxes add a further 320!
