compensation from East Midland Trains (SWFC away)

Just received a voucher for £132 from EMT, representing a refund for an adult & a child ticket.
It is well worth claiming from them. Obviously we would have preferred to have been at the game but it does soften the blow.
We can now use this for any train line within the next 12 months.
Chesterfield probably

  • Glad to hear they've done the right thing by you. Must admit I didn't expect it. Is that just a re-imbursement of the fare or have they refunded you for the price of the match tickets as well?
  • I didnt claim for match tickets, thought it might muddy the waters too much.
Just happy to get something back as I hadnt expected to get the full refund on all the journey including SouthEastern
  • A letter came last yesterday to say that they are 'working on my claim'. They better be.
  • A good news story for a change......glad to hear it KS...and it will give hope to others who have claimed....after all, they've now set a precident.
  • I have also had confirmation from midland trains yesterday. We had two first class returns at £60.00 each, so they have given us a £120.00 train voucher which can be used with any company valid for 12 months. I also enclosed our match tickets to which they have given us the option to purchase 2 return tickets to Chesterfield for £25.00 each which after a phone call they have agreed to upgrade to first class.
  • It get's better.....well done EMT is all one can say.
  • Better then nothing I know but Still a bit of a piss take that they give it to you in travel vouchers.
  • We mainly do away games on the train, so it solves a problem for us and they will get used anyway! will probably fund Preston or Carlisle for the promotion party!
  • Oh yeah dont get me wrong I wouldn't mind either way either as I go to most away. But if someone fancied sheff wed as a one off, they would be stuck with the vouchers.

They could sell them on here to someone who is going to an away game.

  • Got the £25 ticket deal from them for the chesterfield game, but they only gave me a voucher of £46, half of what i paid, as i couldn't send them the return tickets as they were swallowed by the barriers when we arrived in st pancras.

yeh but thats not for them to assume. they should be giving you your cash back its a pisstake. you go into a shop and buy something then you decide you dont want it even though theres nothing actually wrong with it - you take it back and get a full refund. these f*ckers sell you something, completely muck it up and then only compensate you with vouchers which means the money goes straight back into their coffers anyway

Hmm. I'm sat here thinking did people not make it to bramall lane aswel
  • Yep, your right, title should read SWFC not United, sorry!
Must have been overcome with excitement at receiving something pleasant in the post
  • They should refund the match tickets too IMO.

You are right, you should get the money back, however you never do. So it's a case of getting the best you can get. I once got nearly £200 in £1 vouchers from Virgin trains, the fun I had when trying to use them.
  • Better then nothing I know but Still a bit of a piss take that they give it to you in travel vouchers.
Totally agree, a percentage of the vouchers will not be used, so they make a saving on that. They failed to provide a service but you have to use them again to get money back. Does not sound like you received any compensation so if when you do travel when them any on train purchases made will add to reducing the cost of the refund to them. Whilst in this specific case you are OK with it, not everybody will be. Sneaky customer service disguised to minimize cost.

  • You cannot use the vouchers online. you have to go to a station and use them.
Still, better than nothing, which is what I was expecting,
    Is todays game still on?

  • I just rang the east midlands corporate and events team regarding purchasing discounted rail tickets for chesterfield, and said that considering the unpredictable weather at the moment, what the lastest time i could book discounted rail tickets for saturdays game would be.
Those who like me are still undecided, you apparently have until 3pm on Friday to book your discounted tickets, so thats the latest you can leave it to judge the weather forecast.
  • The following is a link to the European Commission Regulation covering the rights of rail passengers, including those affected by delay and cancellation. It's a bit wordy and not particularly interesting, but Article 16 on page 7 may be of interest to some of you, particularly the following section concerning compensation payments relating to delays and cancellations:

    2. The compensation of the ticket price shall be paid within
one month after the submission of the request for compensation.
The compensation may be paid in vouchers and/or other services
if the terms are flexible (in particular regarding the validity period
and destination). The compensation shall be paid in money at the
    request of the passenger.

    Full Regulation: http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:2007:315:0014:0041:EN:PDF

Obviously the train companies don't publicise this, but I suspect that if you give them a ring and quote that paragraph to them along with the title of the Regulation, you should be able to get them to swap your vouchers for cash. Hope that helps.
  • I can confirm that Largo is correct. I have received my vouchers and rang them up earlier (to complain cos they'd sent me the wrong amount the dozy bastards), and I said to them I don't want vouchers I have no use for them please give me the cash back. They didnt even argue and just said if i post the vouchers back they will send me a cheque. Didn't even have to quote the legislation to them.
