Charlton vs. Rochdale | 4th February 2012 | *****GAME OFF*******

A chilly evening at The Valley on Tuesday was momentarily warmed up by red hot Dale Stephens strike deep into injury time to claim a draw against Bury. Once the euphoria of the wonder strike had died down though, it left many fans (and undoubtedly the coaching team) disappointed in a game that many expected to win. Too many players were operating at a level far lower than we have come become accustomed to and Chris Powell’s changes to the starting line-up seemingly made the team lose some fluidity.

That being said, another home game against Rochdale (who defeated Bury 3-0 only a matter of days ago) gives the players the chance to prove that the gap that they have built up at the top of League One is one that can be maintained (or indeed grow). Saturday’s opponents are sitting in the relegation zone of the third tier of English football and before their derby win against Bury – they had not won in their nine previous outings. They are conceding almost 2 goals a game away from home and have the worst away attack in the division so there can only be one outcome right…

The return of Dale Stephens are the omission of top-scorer Bradley Wright-Phillips raised a few eyebrows on Tuesday night and although the former justified his inclusion with his equaliser, Bradley Pritchard can feel somewhat hard done by. Whether or not the former Oldham man can manage two games in five days following a significant time out injured remains to be seen, but the early season central midfield pairing is likely to stick. After an ineffective partnership of Kermongant and Clarke, fitness permitting, BWP is likely to come back into the starting XI to try and end a lengthy barren spell. If it’s deemed that he needs another game off, Danny Haynes showed glimpses against Bury that he is likely to be a better foil to Yann. Everyone else is likely to retain their positions although indifferent Danny Green performances could see Scott Wagstaff come in from the cold onto the bench to put some pressure on the winger.

A bounceback from a mini-blip is really needed to show the rest of the league we’re worthy of our superiority. We’ll thump them 4-1.

Come on you reds!

  • A polite reminder that the annual tribute to those players, officials and fans who have died in the previous 12 months will take place before kick-off.

Fans may wish to get to their seats a little earlier.
  • My Prediction - Postponed sadly .
  • a nervy 2-1 victory

anything but a win and my bumhole will start going (more than usual)
  • My Prediction - Postponed sadly .
I know it's evil but I hope the Rochdale fans get 3 quarters of the way to London before it gets called off. Twice last season I lost out. First time lost £35 on trains. Second got to Stoke and lost a lot of money in petrol, Pay back.

If the game goes ahead 3-0 to the addicks.

  • Better not be postponed - I've got a car-full going!
  • Ditto. £36 train return from South Wales!
  • A heart-warming 3-0 to the Addicks. Stephens, YK & Jackson with the goals.
  • 2-0 with a BWP brace
  • TBH - this is probably almost certain to be postponed. Must be a 90% chance of a call off at least. Thurs nigh -3, Fri night - 4 and barely popping above freezing all day. I just cannot see how this is even close to going ahead.
  • 2-0 hollands and yann and a red card for green

It all depends on the ref... Let us prey!
  • As long as it doesn't snow I reckon it'll go ahead.

    This exactly.
  • A reasonably comfortable home win is needed to stop those of a nervous disposition losing sight of the bigger picture and even those who are made of sterner stuff wondering if we're going to stagger towards the finishing line rather than cruising.

Having seen we're the same price as we were Bury, which is a surprise, I've lumped on-hope I don't regret it...

If the latest forecasts are to be believed I think we should be ok.
Pitch is fully covered and the snow that is (maybe) forecast is for late Saturday in to Sunday.

  • Bradders and Hayes, 'old school' pairing to start, Kermorgant rested, unchanged otherwise. Cruise, 2-0.
  • Did think Kerms looked a bit leggy Tuesday, but then he came to life when Haynes came on.

  • Id like to see the Hayes and BWP partnership back, now we have Stephens available, not meaning to do down Kermorgant as he is a great player for us but gives him a rest and a chance to see if those 2 can get the fantastic partnership at the start of the season going again.

Would love to see this but I think that Hayes' confidence is probably by now well and truly shot:-( I hope he still has the fire going in his belly... And thus be proven wrong here...

  • Agree with the above two posters. Would love to see BWP and Hayes given another shot together now Stephens is back. We played some of our best football at the start with these two up top.
  • Think Hollands will be given a rest with Pritchard coming in, maybe even Waggy for Green.

    2-0 the Addicks.
  • 1 - 0 Charlton. Wiggins with the goal.
  • IF the game goes ahead, we will walk all over them: 5-1.
  • Dont know how anyone can call for Hayes to come in as it means Kerm left out.
  • 1-0 Charlton, Green to score.
  • CP says that Rochdale having a new manager won't make a difference.
I beg to differ, since his appointment Coleman has brought in a couple of new players and changed the way the The Dale play, so now instead of being on a loosing run they have just thumped their local rivals and will arrive here on a high with a new set up.

I would like to see Waggy in for Green, BWP back with Big K but with Hayes and Haynes on the bench for the last 30 minutes to gig ether a tryout together. If Stephens is fit then keep him and Hollands in the midfield with Pritchard on the bench.
Do that and we might win 1-0
  • Weather permitting this will be a tough match.

I hope we can win it.

The Rochdale fans who we sponsored the game at Spotland game are down for this one, meal in the Phoenix & Dragon first and then on to either the Liberal or Connie Club before the game. After our 3-0 win (Solly hat-trick) we'll be off to the Greenwich Union to discuss the match.
  • Rochdale are not our bogey team because they have only ever beat us once in the league. That was near the end of last season when nobody really cared because Sir CP and the Charlton board were laying the foundations to get us out of this league .

    2-0 to the Addicks.
