Blowing a big lead....

edited February 2012 in General Charlton
Is there any precedent for teams at the top blowing big leads & either missing promotion or the title....

I am thinking of Newcastle in 95/96 when they had a 10 point lead in the Premier League & blew it?

Any other good examples?

(disclaimer 1: I really don't think we will blow this lead, but you never know!)
(disclaimer 2: i don't know if blowing a lead is a euphemism but just in case I'll get it in first --- oooer Missuss!)

  • I seem to remember Millwall were top in 95/6 and end up getting relegated.
  • Leeds were quite a few ahead a couple of years ago and just scrapped into the playoffs (i think)

TBH I thought this was going to be another 'Liverpool sign bent' type post

  • I think Wolves shanked a big lead at the top of the Championship a good few years ago.

    Nothing like positive thinking!! ;-0
  • Wolves in the old 1st Div (Early Prem days) spring to mind. Even booked their Promotion to the Premiership Party.
  • doom and gloom - my dog has a long lead

They went up second in the end.

  • Didn't york get relegated from the then Division 4 when they were miles ahead in like October?
  • Man Utd were miles ahead of Arsenal in 1997/98, some bookies even paid out, before Arsenal ended up winners of the Prem.

I'm still laughing now about that! Weren't they top on Boxing Day?

    HAHAHAHA!!

Didn't we start the rot? 2-0 in the snow.

I think they lost the last game of the season at Ipswich and didn't realise what had happened until the other results came through and so, true to form, those cheeky chappies from the Old Kent Road started ripping the seats up and intimidating the tractor boys.
We, meanwhile, had qualified for the play offs thanks in no small part some inspired performances by a young Lee Bowyer.
  • And after that we had pretty well 10 years of uninterrupted success and, er, they didn't.
