The Bury 'save' last night

DRFDRF
edited February 2012 in General Charlton
I sit in the North Upper and from where I was sitting it looked like their goalkeeper had come for one shot and was on the floor and then the follow-up shot was saved by a player diving and using his hand to push it away. To be fair a great save, but not by the keeper.

Did anyone else get a good view of this?

  • I thought the same but couldn't quite believe what I'd (thought) seen as there seemed muted protests if any.

I wondered if I'd imagined it but the bloke next to me thought the same.
  • My friends that sit behind the goal said it was a stonewall penalty.
  • Yep looked like a definate penalty from where I sat in the NU.
  • Hit the post
  • I thought it was a stonewall penalty too - seems like another one that is affected by where you sit.
  • What's with all the "stonewall", you all sound like Alan Hansen & Alan Green

I have always said that so has my dad can't kill the lingo im use to.
  • Both the commentator and Jason Euell on the radio were sure it was handball. Knowing it was D'urso, I knew it would not be given.
  • I sit in north upper and thought it was handball aswell
  • We would probably have missed the pen anyway!!!

  • Why do Scottish people say "penalty KICK" rather than just penalty like the rest of us? Hansen must have said it 100 times on MOTD last night.
  • couldn't bloody see it from where I was standing in NL-just a lot of quizzical looks around me as well.
  • It was never a penalty it hit the post!

It is a penalty kick. You can't head it. We also say bye-kick meaning goal kick and shy for throw in.
  • I thought it was a pen or at worst a corner from North Upper. Couldn't believe he gave a goal kick.

Would like to see it again because I didn't think there was any doubt at the time but body language from the players made me think they probably got it right.
  • I was reading the match thread and i thought it was a penalty as well.
  • worst angle ever in the west...but thought it was a corner

    haha
  • I had no idea what everyone was shouting about. I thought it was the outside of the post
  • Saw a hand deflect it onto the post, but couldn't tell whose hand it was. I was north lower but had the luck to be standing behind a bunch of six-foot plus lumps, even when we all stand up I have to stand on tiptoes!

  • I sit right behind it and i only saw it hit the outside of the post, was wondering why everyone was so upset. Then again i could do with wearing glasses!
  • is this the shot from Solly which you are talking about? That shot was definetly going straight as a dye before it hit something and went out so was very suprised when d'urso didn't call it a corner or a pen. 4 Charlton players all appealed for a pen so my thoughts were was it accidental and couldn't get out of the way or intentional. Couldn't believe it when he said goalkick.
  • I was sitting behind the goal, it was their centre back tha dived making a superb two handed save. The shot was heading in the bottom corner.
  • You could claim it was clever by D'Urso. He may have felt the hand was unintentional but had he done that and given a corner he could have got in trouble as the ball was going in but for the hand. I think the handball law gets a bit muddled here as a lot of refs would give a penalty if it blocked a goal when they might not if it didn't.

By claiming he didn't see it hit the hand- he is much less likely to face and censure. then again , he may just have not seen it as a number of our fans didn't either.
  • i just thought he sliced the shot wide(obviously wrong) from my view in nwq
  • had a perfect view. the ball was not going straight, it was curling out. never see the defender make contact with it. it hit the outside of the post.

Interesting. Did you see the defender dive towards it hand outstretched? As that raises a new quesiton. Should a player be punished for an attempted handball? If a player slid in studs up but the player jumped over him they would still be carded for the challenge.
  • Interesting question, DRF.

Not sure, however, that a player should be punished if no actual contact was made with the ball by his hand. Whatever the player's intent, no offence has actually occurred.

It can't be construed as 'dangerous play' risking injury to another player.
  • Thought how Solly hit that was even sweeter than Stephens, obviously closer in. It was so quick it was impossible to track, just looked and felt perfect. I couldn't believe it when it didn't go in, it seemed utterly illogical. Just couldn't see what happened in the North West quadrant. Would like to see it again.

I thought the diving defender's hand pushed it onto the post and out of play for a "corner" as Solly's shot looked as if it was going in from behind the goal but, as I said above, I doubted myself as the protests were muted.

It seems there are a few in Covered End Upper who thought they saw a hand though...
