Our refrigeration company doing ok at present, taking on staff (with the right specialised knowledge), just won £3 millions worth of work since December with more to come in in the next few months, means turnover up, profit up, won a few more maintenance customers, really only being held back by lack of good industrial refrigeration engineers, been looking for 2 experienced ammonia engineers for over a year, none about.

Do freelance media recruitment work and have filled a number of positions and have a few more to fill. The advertising industry is always hit very hard during a recession and for this to start picking up is a good sign.
A lot of my work (cost consultant, construction industry) was to do with building and extending prisons but that has dried right up - just little refurbs and things now. Luckily some of my other clients (Water, schools, defence) are doing things and as a company generally wea re okay as we did what our chief exec describes as 'bagging a mammoth' last year - i.e, a new huge client - EDF, and they are spend spend spend so if i'm honest then yes, i'm doing alright but know loads in the industry that aren't.
Do you carry works on behalf of EDF?
Cos the sums they charge our clients for works are ridiculous. Them & UKPN set the rules & tricky to budge them on cost!
I personally hold Robert Peston responsible for the biggest financial collapse in generations.........and I'm only half joking.

Trouble is, all these so called financial gurus, spout the same old recycled stuff day in, day out, so nobody remembers tomorrow what they were saying yesterday.

I agree entirely. The whole Northern Rock run on the bank was due to his completely irresponsibe reporting. I spoke to one of the most senior central bankers in the country who said he if Peston hadn't broken gone publi about it they could have sorted Northern Rock out as it was a short term liquidity issue.

Last year was genuinely the best year I've ever had, however January has been totally dead (checks phone daily to see if it's working!) and literally everyone I have spoken to says the same. I am lucky that I have no overheads.
Have had enquiries for work in February and March so not panicking just yet, maybe hoping it's just a seasonal thing.
I supply a company who has an Olympic contract and they are still awaiting their first order....which is poor practice but no surprise really judging by the way they are handing things.
We're doing ok. Moved offices late last year, now have 9 full time staff. 100% growth year on year for three years running, BUT ... and I mean BUT ... one of our four largest customers is HMV, so if they did disappear, it would leave the Video industry with no High Street presence, a domination by supermarkets and a decreasing market. itunes, netflix and lovefilm with their downloading and streaming are gaining market share, but not enough to cover the loss HMV would provide.
Thankfully people are still going to the cinema, buying DVDs and LEGALLY downloading films and TV series.
