Advice on where to go for 2 days in Sri Lanka

Got a week there early Feb and have the 1st 2 nights booked in Galle. Have a night in Colombo (not booked a hotel yet) the night before I leave as the flight is early the next morning and the 2 nights before that near Sigiriya. Not booked nights 3 & 4 - anyone been and can suggest anywhere?

Go to Kandy - real old Raj town and some stunning old Colonial hotels.
  • I would second that. Just about enough there to keep you occupied.

Sigiriya is really interesting as well.
  • Yes, was thinking of that. Just got to look at the logistics. But can go via Colombo (?) and then Sigiriya isn't that far from Kandy for nights 5 & 6 is it?
  • I would certainly recommend Dambulla which is on the way to Sigiriya
  • We hired a driver for three days and from Galle, to Colombo, Sigiriya and Kandy. Kandy was the half way point as the Sri Lankan road network iis awful - you'll be lucky to average 20mph.

You must go to the elephant orphange.
  • Unless the roads have improved since 2005 I doubt whether you will average more than 30 mph so be aware that a 200 mile journey could take twice as long as in the UK
  • I cycled over there and wasnt much slower than the cars :-)

They have just opened a new motorway between Colombo and Galle but anywhere else will take ages and the coach drivers are crazy.

Dambulla is a must and you will probably be able to do a day trip or so from Kandy. I didn't do the Elephant orphange but spoke to someone else who did and they enjoyed it as long as it's your thing. Stunning scenery if you go further into the middle and up to Nuwara Eliya and then descend again to Ella. Ella is very laid back and popular with backpackers.
  • Great. Will schedule in Dambulla. I definitely would like to go to the elephant orphanage - any suggestions how/when to fit in to my itinerary?
  • You can get a bus from your hotel in Kandy out to it. I believe you need to get there early to see the first feeding time. About an hour or so on the bus I think.

The hotel reception staff will be able to help or http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?threadID=1695207 . Plenty of stuff if you Google..

You can't bring one back on the plane.

  • Great, thanks for the ideas. That's me sorted. Yes ga, would be over the luggage allowance
  • Will be there in July returning from the Maldives, but its just for a 24 hour stopover in Colombo. We wont get far in a day but if there is anywhere worth visiting let me know please.
  • If you really want to make the most of your time, get a local to drive you about everywhere. It costs next to nothing and not only will they take you to see some of the most spectacular parts of the island, but it seems that they know everyone and you get the best of your time.

Make sure you try a red banana.

The precious stones out there are stunning and great value.
  • i went to colombo for work and never had time to go but Kandy is supposed to be good
  • The Temple of the tooth is worth seeing.
  • I have spent a fair bit of time in Sri Lanka PF, including some aid work in Jaffna during the war, Neuralia is incredible and we got some r&r in the Tea Factory hotel, just an incredible place and my room was above the cloudbase, quite bizarre.

If on the south coast a mangro swamo safari is pretty cool Near Tangalli. Also if a cricket fan, the ground at Gaul is quite something, I watched a test between Australia and Sri Lanka from the ramparts of the Portugese fort, the Lighthouse hotel nearby is good for grub as well.

Make sure you have a hopper for breakfast and five coins beer is pretty good. I loved it as a country and hope to go back one day, not sure what travel access is like north of Kandy now the war has finished but if you do get to Killinochi and see an addicks shirt circa 2001 then it may be one I gave to a Tamil lad, it made his day, have a great time its a fantastic country
  • The egg hoppers are even better.

The bakery's are also good and they love their spices.
  • Nuwara Eliya is a must and my fondest memory from my visit in the mid 90's. The Elephant Orphanage was great too, but get there early.
  • Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa are great if ancient ruins are of interest.
  • Go to Hikadua and laze on the beach or do some scuba.
