Chris Powell: most loved manager by own fans ?

edited January 2012 in General Charlton
"Loved" is an overused word, especially in the football context but, in the dictionary sense ( " warm affection, fondness, affectionate devotion" ), he's got to be right up there with Kenny Dalglish and ( perhaps ) Tony Mowbray. Perfectly illustrated by the reaction to his goal against Coventry and his appointment as our manager. Redknapp and Moyes are greatly admired by supporters of their respective clubs - as was the Curbs here - but they just don't prompt the same emotional reaction. Likewise, whilst Ferguson's achievements have been immense, he's hardly the most attractive of personalities, is he ?

Of course, there are many better managers in English football than Chris Powell - after all, he's only been doing it for a year. Football is also a very fickle and cruel game. I remember Lenny being repeatedly serenaded in one of the bars over at Palace after the Fulham home game in 1986 with the chant " there's only one Lenny Lawrence"; not a man to get carried away by reaching the top flight for the first time in 29 years, he dolefully remarked that " this time next year, there may be no Lenny Lawrence."

Whatever happens in the future - and I believe that we are going up this year - there will always be a irreducible and major pool of deep affection for Chris amongst the Charlton faithful.

  • I love him and I think he loves me too
  • I have supported Charlton since the 60s,heroes being Derek Hales,Mark Kinsella,Eddie Firmani to name a few.But Sir Chris Powell is my all time hero now,Sheffield Wednesday last saturday banging his arms in time to red army and holding the badge at the end of the match...oh how the man cares.......What a fairy tale it would be to lead us back to the premiership, cant think of a better man to do that....can you?
  • I loved Curbs to be fair. I was very emotional when he was doing his leaving speech and also I recall when he said on the last day of 2000/01 that he wasnt going to West Ham.

But yes Chris Powell has everything going for him. Intelligent, calm, measured, adoration of the supporters. That goal against Coventry is up there with my favourite moments ever watching Charlton.
  • Tough question purely because he's only 18 months in. The love affair will be inextricably attached to our success or otherwise and although for the moment everything is rosy and we are all at this moment very loved up, its football we are talking about here and things can change very quickly. I would be interested to know what percentage were completely in favour of the relationship at the very end of last season. One thing I will concede is that Chris has shown all the attributes needed and even a few that are not and I doubt any Charlton fan doesn't believe that the club is very special to him. He certainly has the potential to become the most loved Charlton manager of all time but I think the definite answer to that question is a very long way off.
  • One of the reasons we 'love' him is because he so clearly loves us back. Well, not individually, perhaps , but he loves the club - and at the end of the day the club is its fans, not whatever bunch of players, directors, coaches etc. happen to be the brief custodians of the badge at any given time.

And Paul Sturgess is right that the last manager who genuinely felt about the club the same way as we do was Curbishley. With Dowie, Pardew and Parkinson, whether you rated them as managers or not, you always knew they were doing a paid job and not conducting a love affair.
  • @cyrildavies you missed Cyril Davies from your list.

I have seen every manager since Eddie Firmani and none have engendered the emotional ties that CP has. I think there are a lot of reasons for this, the enthusiasm he showed as a player, the wider exposure players and managers now get and his personality. When he joined last season he joined with a larger well of good will than any other manager and as fans we dug deep into that well last season. I for one would not have been sad to see him go, especially after the D&R result when I saw Charlton fans racially abuse him. I said before he was appointed that I didnt want him because his legendary status would be heavily tarnished by managing us, I now, unless he leaves us like Howe did Bournemouth, that status will not be damaged, but it will be severely tested when we go through those difficult patches, which will be inevitable in future seasons.
  • To me, staying to see the job through to its conclusion is the true test of how much he loves 'his' club. I loved Curbs and would like to believe that he could have gone long before he did, to a better paid job, but stayed due to his love for the club.
If Powell is as successful as we all believe he can be, other clubs will be interested in his services. If offers come in, will he/ would he want to go? To me that will test his passion for 'his' club. No matter what success is on offer at other clubs, my support has never wavered, will his?

To me Powell could develop the status of my well loved labrador (if you're reading Chris no offence intended). Even if they do something you dont like, you forgive them and trust them. Whenever you come home they always show you how appreciated they are to see you. Whatever tricks they do, are somehow better and more fulfilling than anyone elses dog....and when the time comes for them to 'go' it is an aweful emotional situation. Still a good well behaved dog will give 10+ years good service. Lets enjoy a bright future with plenty of great trips out together!
  • I bought the home shirt with:

    Powell
    3
    god

On the back of it, although it looks like Powell freed the gods...

Hes a great bloke. Hope he's with us for a long time which I think he will be.

Arise Sir Chris Powell, the legend in the making.

  • Lets name a stand after him.... :p
  • "The Chris Powell Covered End" has a ring to it. ;-)
  • I remember seeing the thread on here one evening when SCP was first suggested as a candidate for manager - it immediately felt so right, and I couldn't believe none of us had thought of him sooner. OK, it got a bit tough late last season, but he has so learnt from that and it's wonderful to see the smile back on his faceand the love-in continuing. The way he has rebuilt not only the team, but the Club and the spirit is close to a miracle. Long may it continue. We love you Chrissie, we do....
  • That moment today at the end was as close to football heaven as it gets for me , Chris Powell gets us, he loves us and he can go all the way with this club, he realises that and I get the feeling this is a match and mariage made in heaven,

I bought into it straight away , and I could see the vision, as could many others on here and in power at our club
  • I think that goal v Cov might be my greatest single moment at the Valley. I love him.
  • all right you lot!

will he be a 'Would Ya' contender if/when we are promoted?
  • unlike most of you i have unconditional love for SIR CHRISTOPHER POWELL not wrapped up in results or career moves or any glory factor he is a rare being of pure class and he oozes it, his calmness is almost curbesque like

i love curbs like i love the wife but i love SCP like my sons

and you can all lap him up when it suits but he's coming home to me tonight and will forever

  • It sounds like our fans are already in the throes of orgasm .....!!
  • I could not agree more NLA, real genuine emotion, a real connection very rarely seen these days. However it has to be said that his reputation as a player at the Club gives him a great start. One thing I particularly appreciate is the way in which he communicates openly and honestly with us on the website.
  • I have always loved him , and as a would ya along hell yeah

  • He's like one of us - love him like a brother. Curbs was more aloof and wise - love him like a grandfather.
  • LOVE is a very big word, he is going to have to prove it with either, promotion as champions or a close second, if not a play off victory and flowers and a slap up steak dinner at the beefeater...not orange flowers though, they are friendship colours according to my girlfriend, she delighted in remarking that at the orange roses i found outside for her....

a phone call would be nice too Chris, jesus what are we? chopped liver?
  • i've had his baby.
  • He wasn't all that loved last year during the bad times, many would have been happy to be rid of him.
  • only those that were short sighted and thick
  • I'll freely admit I was one of those dubious about Chris's appointment, particularly after all the stuff about having to get promoted last season that Slater came out with at the time of Parkinson's sacking. Luckily the reaction to the end of season slump wasn't as bad as I'd feared, and his prior good relationship with the fans meant that far fewer were calling for his head than would have been the case if it was anyone else.

I'm SO pleased (and relieved) it's working out so far this season, but even if it hadn't I'd still love him.
  • Nothing wrong with being unsure about it at the time. He was unproven. And even if we got Mourinho everything would have still seemed shite.

Saying that, id rather have powelly than jose anyday. Certain pedegree at this level of football management, and powell has it
  • I think a lot of us have unconditional love for the legend, Sir Chris, but of course if he was a failing as a manager we wouldn't want our club and his staus damaged. What legends have a knack of doing though is being succesful, probably something to do with why they got to be legends in the first place! We shouldn't have a I love him more than you competetion, we all love the bloke and even had he failed we would have still loved and respected him but now he is engraving his name even bolder in Charlton History. I'm excited to see where all this will take us.
  • He will manage England, not for while, but he will..
  • I also believe he'll manage England one day.
The measure is how the Valley treats him when things aren't going so well - it can be an unforgiving place for both Manager and players.
For me, he is one of the best - let's hope the rise continues and the Club get some investment to grow further. Chris looks like a Manager who can pick up players who have not achieved their potential and get that potential out of them - a special talent, for sure!
