Chesterfield vs Charlton Feb 11th 2012

On 11th Feb, our Alex is planning to travel from Nottingham Uni to Chesterfield to watch Chesterfield vs Charlton - the first time Charlton have played the Spireites at theirs in the League since 1981 - 31 years ago. I was at that game in 1981 at Chesterfield's old ground - I was barely out of nappies, of course! Charlton won that game 1-0 - a Derek "Killer" Hales goal in the 5th minute - I was late for kick off and arrived in the 6th minute! Happy days! Nicky Johns in goal for Charlton that day - legend!

    Was there: my favourite CAFC goal ever, Killer just hit the ball, straight into the top corner.

    Apart from the goal, I remember the Derby fans who turned up after their game was postponed and caused chaos in the home end at Saltergate.

    The local plod thought it would be best to escort them around the pitch to join in with the away fans and about 50 or 60 odd Derby fans were duly deposited into the away end singing "Derby and Charlton".

    Boy did they get a pasting - with two or three of them jumping over the wall at the rear of the away end to get out. There was about a thirty foot drop to the pavement.

    I still think I've got a Derby County scarve in my loft from that game.
