The Match Thread yesterday.....

edited January 2012 in General Charlton
Christ, how collectively nerve wracking was that !

Thanks to RedM and Paddy for providing the updates and holding it all together. 1,756 people throughout the world in different timezones were all in it together for a couple of hours of stress and laughs !

  • Yup, one of the best match threads ever ... what a day
  • My first read of the 'match thread' - and what a game to do it on, I felt like I was there...bouncing
  • Had the radio commentary on, the CL match thread and the gillette soccer special! Literally kicking every ball. F5 took a hammering............Great updates. Bring on the Blades!
  • Yep fantastic work RM and Paddy!
  • I was at the game yesterday, but read through the match thread today, just to re-live the moments. Must say the emotions you could feel reading it pretty much matched what I was feeling at the game, apart from thinking that we had gone 2-0 up ! well done, a great read after as well as during the game.
  • Took a sneaky look at my phone during work yesterday and had texts from my dad and brother saying 1-0 jacko and immediately broke into 'johnnie oh johnnie Jackson runs down the wing for me' finished at four and was non stop refreshing the match thread, felt like I was there! Same again next weekend lads, cheers RM and paddy!
  • I was following the match on Twitter and there was a number tweets celebrating the goal when it was scored. About 15 mins later there was another 'yeeessss get in' and thought we'd gone 2-0 up. But alas, it was someone who'd only just caught up with the score.
  • My f5 doesn't work.. constantly manually clicking on and off the match thread was a nightmare, made it even worse!!

Glad we got the result we wanted!

i fooking hated every single minute of it

started by cafc player doing the normal wrong match commentary

then sheff weds all over us

then i think it was scowcroft describing us as a ball playing team with more about them than sheff weds, then another 10 mins of sheff bombarding and us breaking away

then up steps jj i go mad and spend the next 55-60 mins waiting for them to score until llera came on then i calmed a bit,

    last 5 were horrific

20 benson smoked 5 pints of cider drank

then off for a sit down to relax

it was the worst football experience i have endured since the play off final

it werent too nice bein there either mate.

the wiggins off the line incident was nearly cardiac arrest time. its worse when its down the other end, so you half see what happens and then split second later you hear the crowd.

all adds up to a painful experience but like a drug you keep goin back for more.

  • Just read the thread.

    Bunch of pansies.
    ;o)

Why not just click the 'reload' button (the swirly arrow thing) next to the 'address bar'?

  • my missus said to me i dont know anyone who paces around like an expectant father just because of a poxy football match

i told her that a it is not just a poxy football match, and every other person she knows who likes football, dont love it or love their team enough if they can listen to it and not care enough to be concerened

so just do me a favour take the kids out or take them upsatirs and let me listen

rest of the evening spent in the dog house

I got caught up with all the train debacle and consequently spent the best part of 7 hours poncing about on trains yesterday (plus 20 minutes desperately legging it round a deserted Doncaster City Centre trying fruitlessly to find a chippy to get some half decent grub on the way home), and all for 2 hours in the middle at Hillsborough, the majority of which was spent just wishing the game was over.

Didn't hear the final whistle but when I saw Kermogant looking up at us with his arms in the air, the feeling of relief was incredible!

And I bet you would go through it all again just for the feeling!!

  • Indeed, doubtless there'll be a few more hairy ones before the end of the season..

In fact looking back I'd put it down as one of my most enjoyable away days for a while.. after a couple of years down in this pony league hanging about at 8,000 capacity grounds it's a buzz to go and watch something which vaguely resembles a big football match, at a big, almost full ground between two big clubs desperately wanting to win

  • Id be lost without the match threads. Always get a great idea of wahts going on and get it updated instantly too unlike bbc.
  • I am very grateful for the match thread -- spent yesterday morning in Chicago at an event and broke up the monotony of waiting in numerous queues with the passionate updates on the thread.

    Fantastic stuff.
  • I find reading the match thread afterwards really entertaining. If I'm not at the match I can't bear going near it! Bonkers really!

  • The match thread and @CAFCofficial on twitter have totally changed my Charlton experience over here in Bangkok. My first year he was the relegation year from the Prem, but I was able to watch most of games, due to the licence they have here. After relegation following Charlton became hard and I relied on half time and full time texts from family in the UK. Then I discovered Charltonlife! the match thread is now an essential part of my Saturday. I head to the pub with mates, who watch the Premier League and I plug in the IPAD and get absorbed into the world of Charlton again. When JJ curled the free kick in on Sat I was up out of my chair ounching the air. I now feel like a proper fan again, I never miss an online match (no overseas plastic!, even turned up for Halifax!). It really is a great community and a way of connecting with Charlton. I feel like a fan again. Thanks to RM, PADDY, Lancashirelad and all the others who make this such a positive experience........and keep it up.
  • just read the whole thread. Superb stuff. Charante Addick's 'please make them stop Mummy' in injury time was quality. Much, much worse than if you were actually at the game where I never had any real concern that we wouldn't win.
  • This & twitter certainly comes in handy when abroad!
A big thumbs up from Ho Chi Minh from me!
    Cheers guys xx
  • Concur with everything written. I haven't seen a game for three seasons but I was as nervous as anything on Saturday. Couldn't sleep when I went to bed after the game, too much adrenaline still flowing. Really weird; don't remember this feeling when I was going to watch the team regularly.
  • Thanks for the comments lads and lasses, I'm sure the same goes for Paddy17 as well. I really enjoy being able to do the match thread its my way of 'being there' and letting everyone else know as often as possible whats happening. I try to update every 10 to 20 secs but sometimes it doesnt always work that way....as for Saturday....I have to tell you that my fingers were bloody killing me at the end.......but what a day....loved every second of it....and for those that read it after they get back from the game I hope it reflects the match as closely as possible.....thanks to Charlton Life for allowing me to do this....makes me part of it all.
Back for the Blades game as usual from abou 2 pm.........Cheers.
  • I hate listening to the radio when I can't go and would rather read the match thread
but on saturday pressing F5 was too stressful so I went on to listen to the CAFC Player thingy for the last half hour
you could hear the locals loud and clear screaming abuse as the charlton subs trudged off
the noise was deafening as wednesday got close, culminating in what I think we all thought was an equaliser for a bit when there was a huge roar at the end as wiggins cleared , it was a small delay before the commentators announced no it hadn't crossed the line ..... Proper heart attack/stopping stuff.... It's deffo an easier experience at the game , I never feel as bad losing when I'm there cos I know what happened and you just have an easier feeling being there cos it's real time ....I understand what bangkokaddick is saying , to me,its a lot more stressful not being there than being there....another reason to go to more away games !!
Although I've just been knocked back on my tentative approaches to make the next few away trips , kids partys and the fact she's due to drop in a few weeks meant I'm on a lockdown for away trips over the next couple of months (there's my excuses ... booooo) so match thread stress it is for me for a while yet
Keep up the good work red mid , paddy and co
Small yellow card for Mascots(I think) delayed "yesssssss" or whatever it was that appeared well after we were 1 up :-)
  • I'm based in Thailand and my Saturday night ritual is to listen to the match on Player and contribute to the match thread, as well as having all the other scores from around the league open.

Love every minute of it (or have at least this season!) and long may it continue.
  • OOOh aaaah i can tell you my ticker was going twice the speed and i was there!! Absolute heart in mouth stuff!!
  • I much prefer following the match thread to listening to radio or watching on SSN. On Sat I restricted myself to refreshing the thread once a minute - every time the clock changed on my computer. It helped a lot with the stress of the last 15-20 mins: actually showed we were quite in control, with not a lot happening in several of those minutes...until the heart in mouth moment of the clearance off the line.

Great stuff by RM and Paddy - and fantastic to have just under 2k following it on CL without the site crashing, so well done AFKA, Lookie et al too!!
  • It was the clearance off the line that topped everything.
