SCP - A Year In Charge

edited January 2012 in General Charlton
High - His appointment & his summer transfer dealings

Lows - A minor amount of supporters questioning his appointment when on that losing streak.

The Future - Hopefully promotion automatically this season and a chance to show his managerial ability in Championship

  • Not really a low, in my view, it was a perfectly reasonable reaction due to Powell's apparent inexperience immediately after his appointment and when the brief good spell finished disasterously. The high for me is that he proving - although still learning - that we didn't need to worry so much. Our club seems in safe hands, and a Legend need not be tarnished.
  • i meant more in a low from his perspective.

He basically inherited that team from the other joker, won his first four probably due to the buzz around the club...then it went tits up. Must have been hard for him to try and get a reaction out of players he himself probably had little belief in.
  • i really think if we make it this year i could see Chris doing a curbs and taking us all the way and being around for many years to come, first black england manager anyone?
  • Chris Powell

He has said in interviews that there was a gloom about the place when he got here, with many players feeling that they were either better than the club or that the club couldn't go anywhere. Those are the players that were presumably shown the door in the summer and we now have a bunch of lads who are optimistic and enthusiastic.

Agree with razil, but lets not go over old Parkinson ground. with that record eddie Howe would have been out on his ear in May, IMO, fortunatley CP has a well of goodwill and the board supported him well.

my low would be that the fans seem less able to enjoy the heights that we have reached in this division and there seems to be a lot more bickering about almost anything, god know what we would be like if we were doing badly, although daggers away probably gives a clue to that.

high - the fans at Fulham. Its good to be able to really enjoy yourself despite the result.

Have a feeling this is why we let Semedo go. He thought he was bigger than the club?

Quite probably. I think there were a few of the longer serving players who felt that they were too good to be at a league one club and a few of the newer players who didn't think the club was good enough to get out of league one. Neither attitude is helpful and Saint Christopher has made it very clear that attitude is one of his top criteria when considering bringing someone in.

  • I think people still supported him, just the jury was out and there was an acceptance that he would need to do better next (this) season to remain in the role. We all dearly wanted him to succeed and being Chrissy Powell - a Charlton legend- meant that he was never under the sort of pressure another manager could well have been.
