Footballers and degrees

edited January 2012 in General Charlton
I have just read that Socrates ( recently deceased) had a doctorate in medicine and philosophy. David Wetherall has a first in chemistry . Perhaps not so surprising to see so few footballers with degrees , but Ian Dowie ..... A masters in engineering , ( no pun intended) that did come as a surprise .

  • Everytime Steve Highway was mentioned in the 1970's his degree was always brought up, he was so clever they even gave him his own column in shoot! I think educated footballers were even rarer then....
  • Bradley Pritchard has a degree as does Matt Taylor

Mikel Alonso has a degree in economics and has studied philosophy at masters level.

Looks like CP does most his recruiting on the basis of academic attainment; I've heard we're getting Stephen Hawking in this transfer window.

Chris had arranged a meeting with him, Chris stood him up and the deal was a non starter.
  • There was a Scandanavian defender, played Premier League football (for Villa maybe?) who's name escapes me, he had a law degree and after retiring a couple of years ago went back to his homeland to practisce law.

Think that was Gudni Bergsson late of Spurs and Bolton

Lawrie Madden had a degree, however I don't think it was in penalty taking

    Clarke Carlisle.

Edit: Maybe not according to wikipedia...
  • Ossie Ardiles supposedly has a law degree .. given that he was around at the time of the infamous 'Junta' perhaps his is a gunlaw degree
  • Steve Coppel ..... has anyone seen Jodi Craddock of Wolves paintings ? .. he deserves a fine arts degree
  • Ossie Ardiles supposedly has a law degree .. given that he was around at the time of the infamous 'Junta' perhaps his is a gunlaw degree

Junta ? ... aka Villa (Ricky not Aston)
  • Doesn't Andy Hughes have a degree in sports science or similar?

Ipswich used to have 3 players in their squad with degrees, predictaly enough nicknamed 'The Three Degrees' - Clive Baker was one, forget the other two though.
  • A degree to a footballer is about as much use as a pair of footy boots to Doherty

Presumably there will be players who could have done a degree who opted not to because they were playing football all the time from the age of 16. Paul Robinson, captain at Millwall, went to the school where I teach and he was considered to be of Oxbridge standard. (Thus winning the prize for greatest gulf in IQ between player and those who chant his name.)
  • Tony GAlvin of Spurs had a degree of some sort, I know he spoke russian.
  • I seem to remember James Beattie was planning on going to uni to study medicine if he hadn't succeeded as a footballer
  • Think Shaka hislop worked at NASA and had a related degree
  • Fairly sure Rommedahl was studying Economics at uni before becoming pro, not sure if he ever completed his degree
  • Fairly sure Rommedahl was studying Economics at uni before becoming pro, not sure if he ever completed a tackle
  • Steve Palmer has a degree in software engineering from Cambridge. He is believed to be the only footballer of the modern era to study at Cambridge. "It was a bit of a novelty for the media when I started but once you cross the line into professional sport you are judged on nothing but your performance," said Palmer. "My ability to study was perhaps due to the same attributes that allowed me to learn the game."........The Guardian
