I have just read that Socrates ( recently deceased) had a doctorate in medicine and philosophy. David Wetherall has a first in chemistry . Perhaps not so surprising to see so few footballers with degrees , but Ian Dowie ..... A masters in engineering , ( no pun intended) that did come as a surprise .

Everytime Steve Highway was mentioned in the 1970's his degree was always brought up, he was so clever they even gave him his own column in shoot! I think educated footballers were even rarer then....

Presumably there will be players who could have done a degree who opted not to because they were playing football all the time from the age of 16. Paul Robinson, captain at Millwall, went to the school where I teach and he was considered to be of Oxbridge standard. (Thus winning the prize for greatest gulf in IQ between player and those who chant his name.)
