SCP in today's Guardian

Chris's views on the Racism debate in the game from the Guardian on line . I'm proud that we are a 'leading club' in this area and would urge all supporters to bear this in mind when going to games.

The Charlton Athletic manager, Chris Powell, feels that football's racism storm has been a source of embarrassment for the English game when it has been happy to point the finger elsewhere.

"It's a game for all and I really don't like it," said Powell, one of only two black managers in the Football League. "I want everything to be right. I know it can't be perfect, the world isn't like that, but we want our game to be right and want our country to be a leading light. We've been complaining about other countries when it looks like we've got a few incidents here.

"You have ignorance from people and small-mindedness and you don't want to see that. We've had an incident recently at Liverpool. I don't know too much but I just want this game to be right for everyone, regardless of background.

"I wouldn't say it's going backwards at an alarming rate. We've had the incidents and want them dealt with in a correct manner. It's a shame there's something like this when we've made great strides in this country. It just goes to show, it's always going to be there."

Powell added that he wants clubs and supporters to make sure football remains a game for everyone, not one for some people to be threatened by others. "I just want people to play this game and support this game in the right way.

"I hope clubs are dealing with it in the right way. I can talk for my own club and we've been a leading club for years but even we can't stand still and I don't want anyone to stand still.

"People come from all over the world to play in our country and other countries and there's still a lot of education needed and ignorance to deal with. Hopefully now these incidents will show everyone that we still need to keep it at the forefront and we keep educating everyone, not only in our country but around the world."

  • Completely agree with everything CP says in this interview.
  • It is the stance that will help convince players to come to us.

    More importantly, it is right!

Shame a minority of our fans don't agree

  • It's great that we have Powell as manager and I hope our stars rise together. The more high profile he and the club become the greater the platform for his views and the values that Charlton Athletic stand for.
  • When was Chris Powell knighted?
  • About this time last year.
