The was a bloke who ran a Barber's shop in Dartford with his father - youngish lad in his 20's (or he was about 10 years ago) - he also did work as an extra - I can't remember the name of the barber shop but it was nr the small market in Lowfield street.
Was down the Kings Road in the late 60's with a pal during our lunch hour and got asked to be extras in a film that turned out to be Clockwork Orange, think we got £2 a day not bad money for hanging out in the Karova Milk Bar.
I was also an extra around that time, for £2 a day. They filmed 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' in Greenwich Park, and they wanted kids in the background playing football (rather than staring up at the cameras). So as far as I'm concerned, I've been both an actor and a professional footballer.
Daniel Day-Lewis was also an extra in that, but he got the star part of scraping a car in St Alfege's churchyard. Wouldn't talk to us regular oiks though
Did "Sid and Nancy" years ago. Got paid good money (for the time), catering was terrific, people friendly and had a chat with Gary Oldman. So it's obviously changed a lot since then.
Other friends have done a few rock n roll movies, always amused us that they go to a rockabilly club to choose authentic looking extras, then they get to wardrobe and the up-themselves twats there try and dress them as 1970's Showaddywaddy lookalikes because they have not done any research...

He now makes a full-time wage as an extra as it was a better job than anything his degree got him. One thing he always talks about is the massive amount of standing around doing nothing that he has to do.
I did a couple of days as an extra about 15 years ago it was for a programme called Sharmen which had Samantha Janus in it. I had to be there for about 7-7.30 they supplied us with tea coffee and breakfast, lots of standing around and was away by about 3 ish and got paid about £120 aday. I did this through a friend who does it all the time and is still doing it today, he was in Manchester before Christmas doing a Nike advert containing Rooney.
He gets alot of his work through Andy ansah because he used to be involved with dream team the series, I will ask him if he has any contacts for you.

The last film I did, the extras were wearing either very little or very thin clothes. They were left in the cold, hanging around for ages not being allowed to move from the spots given to them in case it messed up continuity etc. They were not spoken to very well and were almost considered the lowest form of life on the set!

My brother got into this last year or so and has done in a pretty short space of time Pirates of the Carribean 3, a car advert with Thierry Henry, a toothpaste ad and some newish horror film with Johnny Depp. Pays well he said but loads of waiting around.

Ive done a few days as an extra. Used to knock about with a girl who was gagging to get on tv by hook or crook. I was only spoken down to once and I told the man doing it to fuck off and was on my way. Got plenty of offers of work after that still. I got speaking to people who do that sort of thing to earn a crust. Thats not a good long term career choice. Decent beer money but I'd strongly suggest doing it with a friend but only see it like others have described, interesting to see how things are put together but don't expect to be talent spotted. If someone is rude to you or treats you unacceptably then stick up for yourself.
Did a short film very early on a sunday morning where the Olympic stadium now is and whilst suffering a very early start basically sat around drinking brews and chatting to the cast and crew. Didn't leave the awning of the tea wagon other than to stand with about twenty other people and pretend we were pointing excitedly at something in the air for about ten minutes and got paid about a ton.
I still get emails from the places that supply the manpower but don't have the time or inclination anymore

Both unpaid, because they were films that my Uncle was involved with. I would love to get involved again in something similar.
