2005 We beat Hartlepool 3-1 in the league cup (Johansson, Bent, Bothroyd). Who would have thought then, that this would have been anything other than a one off encounter or that we'd have armies of Oompaloompahs and Smurfs visiting us?

1953: Charlton 6 (Evans 2, Leary 4), Liverpool 0. Liverpool, managed by Don Welsh, suffered their biggest defeat for 19 years and were later relegated.
1992: Tosan Emiko Ebigbeyi Popo born. Released by Charlton in May, he last made 5 loan appearances for Spanish Segunda División B (third division) side CD San Roque de Lepe.

2003: A brilliant hat-trick from Kevin Lisbie gives Charlton a 3-2 victory over Liverpool. Not only was this unusual from the perspective of Lisbie's performance, but the match was also live on Sky.0 -

1962: Charlton were forced to put notices around the ground warning people to keep off the pitch following a complaint from the referee at the match against Rotherham on this date that a swarm of boys had invaded the pitch and that one of them had hit him on the neck with a large ice cream.
2001: Catalogues thrown on the pitch in protest at Brown's sending off in the 2-0 win against Leicester.

2006: Darren Bent gives Charlton an early lead against Arsenal. But it was snatched away by two goals from Van Persie. The second, a shinned volley, looked quite spectacular but by that stage he shouldn't have been on the pitch.0 -

1980: 0-0 draw away to Barnsley. The start of a club record fifteen match unbeaten run. Ironically the Barnsley game is the only one in the last eight games held on 4th October that we haven't won. The other seven being:

1985: First match 'at home' at Selhurst. Beat Sunderland 2-1 (Reid, Stuart).

1962: Tommy Caton born. Signed for Charlton for £100k in 1988. The following summer a freak accident at home gave him a gash so bad that he required 48 stitches and two skin grafts. Despite this he still managed to make 24 appearances for Charlton the following season. Sadly the Addicks were relegated though. Tommy stayed with the club after relegation, but retired following a foot injury in January 1991. Three months later Tommy died of a heart attack. According to this source Tommy's heart attack may not have been entirely natural. In all, he made 57 appearances and scored 5 goals for The Addicks.

1984: Joe Anyinsah born. 3 goals in 19 matches for The Addicks, including the second in the 4-3 win at Brunton Park in October 2010. Could have been a great player for us, but was unfortunately injured too often. Is currently with Bristol Rovers.

1976: Derek Hales scores a wonder goal (with the help of Colin Powell) as Charlton beat Hull City 3-1. The goal was later selected on The Big Match as their goal of the season.
