They say that the best way to get over a hangover is to get straight back on the horse. That’s what Charlton will be aiming to do on Monday afternoon to shake of the headaches and sickly feelings that they experienced on New Years’ Eve. Ben Hamer’s early sending off against Leyton Orient effectively killed the game as a contest, yet chances in the second half of the game in East London provided a small amount of hope that something could be stolen. But it wasn’t to be. And so we move from East to West in terms of opponents.
Brentford come to The Valley after a quite superb comeback against MK Dons hoping to boost their play-off chances against what is likely to be a leggy Addicks side, but more hopefully, from our point of view, a determined Addicks side. For the first time this season it is difficult to predict the team that Powell will go with against the Bees, the likes of Jackson are not 100% match fit and the shift put in on Saturday may not have helped a recovery. Scott Wagstaff can count himself unlucky not to be given the opportunity to take his opportunity as he was the proverbial sacrificial lamb, but you fully expect Danny Green to come back in the team following his suspension. Whether that is alongside Russel, Hollands and Jackson remains to be seen, the fitness of Ephraim and whether there are niggles resulting from the endeavours at Brisbane Road will affect the selection.
Controversially, I can see Yann Kermongant being rested in favour of Paul Hayes although many are suggesting that BWP be dropped. The effort the Frenchman has put in over the past few games is immense but it could only be a stretch away from a stint on the sidelines. We’ll see.
A win on the second day of 2012 will be most welcome, and is needed, with the Sheffield teams closing the gap to the top. Let’s hope we see a similar response as to when we last lost a league game. 3-1 Charlton.
Come on you reds!

When the game was over everyone looked gutted, this team doesn't like losing. They are also all professional footballers so I don't think tiredness will be a factor especially with Green returning, Ephraim hopefully fit and we even have Leon Clarke to come off the bench if needed
I've let Mrs RM have a fondle as well and they are now firm and ready to perform...........just waiting now.........oops here we go then..........a tricky match that will ebb and flow and we will have some 'hairy' moments....however we will prevail and the addicks will win by the odd goal.....they are suggesting 2-1 or 3-2....and BWP to get his scoring boots back on.
My balls seem so very clear on this prediction that they are now, as I type this, banging....... ..............................against each other, as I put them away....that's made Mrs RM smile!!!!! (First time this year)
Match thread from around 2 pm tomorrow!! Happy New Year all.
No doubt it will be a tough game, not just because we played with 10 men for about 90mins, but because Brentford are a decent side in this league. They'll be on a high after a fantastic come back against an in form MK Dons. Brentford's away form is good, 5 wins and 4 draws with only a single defeat so far. However, they've only scored 12 goals in those 10 away games, yet they seem to keep things very tight at the back, conceding 8.
I think the players will react just like they did after the Stevenage result, it is clear to see they hate losing and will want to get back to winning ways straight away. No doubt there will be at least a couple of changes in the starting XI after having only a full days rest.
Hamer will start as the ban is being appealed against. Green to come back in and I wouldn't be surprised to see Jackson on the bench, but that's a tough call. Hughes or Pritchard to start at centre midfield after a long 90 mins for Hollands and Russell. Clarke to be on the bench as well.
No need to panic, win tomorrow and things will look just as they were a week ago, going into the Fulham game maybe a perfect distraction just for now.
Wright-Phillips will silence the critics and break his duck. Don't feel sorry for donald, people may say it has been a long time coming. Talking about Donald's, Donaldson as will Alexander will be constant threats.
We'll come out on top and win 2-0.
UTA!
Interesting to see if JJ starts. 2 games in 3 games after a long lay off might be a bit much.
Typically nervous crowd, after a typical Sky defeat.
Should win, but a draw to keep everyone on their nerves.
the Stevenage defeat. As has been said above, Brentford will be buzzing
after the MK comeback, and will certainly be up for it, but I can't see
this Charlton team losing two in a row so I'm going for a 3-0 win.
Hollands, Morrison and Clarke with the goals.
Unlike some others in recent times this is a team with balls that doesn't give up up easily. I 'm expecting this to be demonstrated yet again tomorrow with a big win. BWP to silence the doubters
