Got to admit my extended family let off a couple. One lurched over the fence into the neighbours before they got it going. And if there's any kind of wind they are gone in a flash. First time i saw them was at a Czech open air concert on a clear, still night, and they looked magical. But they don't look a good idea to me in a crowded city environment.

Make you right there Prague.
With people having this much fun I can see the government banning them.
We bought a couple for bonfire night. The first one caught a gust on its way up and went over next door's, missing their tv arial by inches. The second is still in the packet, not sure when we'll use it but I think it will be launched from our local rec (probably in contravention of some local by-law) rather than from our garden which is just too small.
With the size of population in China the chances of one of these lanterns not dropping on the bonce of a citizen are non existent and therefore the chances of horrific blazes are minimal as the said chinaman puts it out immediately.
Someone let one off last night in Embankment... it got caught on the tree and fell on someone. The most idiotic thing I had seen in 2011. I have a picture of it on my phone caught in the tree. I will try and get it up.

First one was probably Oggy and the French have tried to burn the new forest for years. Next ;0)
Fair play though......ban them
Oh ..... hang on a minute ......
The Chinese are not even allowed Google let alone killer lanterns.
In Thailand the fabulous Loy Kratong festival has long had the right idea - usually set off on the coast
Apologies, that was acorny one.
Google works fine!
Saw about 30 of the things in the sky on NYE, looked pretty amazing tbh.
It's the letting off fireworks in 2 meter wide side alleys that is dangerous out here!
