Osei Sankofa

Currently at Boreham Wood I think. Released by us in 2008. Thought he would do better than that. At least get a team in league 1 or 2.

  • From a debut at Old Trafford...
  • Daughters B/F plays for them
  • sure he got sent off at Arsenal when we lost 4-0
  • sure he got sent off at Arsenal when we lost 4-0

He did. He had bad knee(s) which effectively finished a top flight career.
  • Wasn't it the Arsenal one we appealed against, and he got an extra game ban?
  • I think he is still banned, frivilous appeal wasn't it

I thought it was an irregular heart beat?
  • ^Think that was James Walker.

That's a blast from the past. Did he play for southend?

  • Saw Osei play against Ebbsfleet last year, he has definitely lost his way, if you saw him now you wouldn't believe he played in the Prem.
  • To be fair I couldn't believe he played in the Prem at the time. Never rated him

I think he played because Luke Young was injured or something like that. He wasn't 1st choice.
  • I remember an old football annual i had, (the sort of thing you'd get at christmas) i think it was a MOTD one. Anyway, Gary Linekar took a double page spread in the book, and gave his 'star for the future' from all the 20 premier league clubs. I hadn't heard of Sankofa at my young age, but i'm sure he was the one that linekar said would make it.
  • Actually just had a look, and i've found a shoot annual from 2005 where someone called Nathan Ashton is our 'One to Watch'. He's a left back, and he now plays for Thurrock. He was likened to Ashley Cole, and a regular in the england u 20's.
  • Nathan Ashton made his Charlton Debut under Dowie, who rated him highly. Recently got cleared of Rape.

  • My mate went to school with Nathan Ashton, and Mark Noble, the west ham player, he played left wing then, and was apparently twice the player Noble was, and was actually surprised Noble made it
  • I can echo the thoughts on Nathan Ashton. A school friend of
mine played against Nathan Ashton in a Charlton youth team game and said he was
one of the best full backs he had ever played against at that level. I wonder
    what went wrong for him.

I watched Ashton play in a Carling Cup match against Carlisle for us (probably in that Dowie season) and he looked distinctly pacy and useful just a bit short possibly.

I also think I'm right in saying that he followed Les Reed to fulham when he became assistant to Sanchez one he left us.

As said I'm surprised he hasn't got a gig at a league club but then look at Moo2 now!

Sankofa had a long term knee problem as a youth so perhaps that caught up with him. He wasn't up to the prem but could have done a job at this level or below, fitness permitting, I reckon.

I think you are correct re the Fulham move.

  • Osei broke something in a game at Underhill. It was not good. I remember the crack. Were any other Lifers there?

He was a decent young prospect but never got it back fully after that injury. Shows the game can be hard on promising young pros.
  • it's amazing watching the Football League show how many ex-CAFC players are around, Bryan Hughes at Accrington for example - testimony to the huge turnover in playing staff these last few seasons.......

When I was living in Germany my father sent me the fixture list for that season from a newspaper and he was Lineker's young player to watch, though I doubt he did any more than scan down through a list of players and vaguely recall that he had made his debut at Man U ( a televised game?) and chose him on that basis.

He may not have made it - but at least he got a game in the premiership...

  • Osei was pictured in my local (Chelmsford) rag yesterday with Paul Mortimer!  Thet were doing some work for the Give Racism The Red Card trust.

I was just about to write this. I did a double take!
