HDD tv recorder Sky TV - Help please

I currently have a second Sky box in my daughters bedroom and don't want to upgrade to Sky+ because of the additional monthly subscription involved. I do however want to be able to record onto a hard disk with pause live tv etc etc.

Anybody got any experience or advice as I really don't have a clue what I need to buy

  • The old Tivo box would do that. I don't know if you can still get them or if they still make them now that they seem to be in bed with Virgin.
  • Pretty sure Sky are offering free HD boxes at present. Cant be that much more a month than a normal multi room subscription.
  • If you already have multiroom, sky don't charge you anymore for the second box to be Sky+, but you still need to ring them up and let them know so that they can register your viewing card and give you Anytime etc on it. You can buy the boxes quite cheaply these days from eBay, or from Sky I think it's £150 for a normal Sky+HD box. I know this is true as I upgraded my multiroom to Sky+ a couple of weeks ago.

Anything else is just a load of palava for an inferior service imo, and considering the box is the only cost, I think it's worth it.
