I'm with Eon - they seem to read th meters a couple of times a year I reckon but you do need to keep on your toes and make sure you are on the best deal - mine recently came to an end and they put me on their standard rate, I checked on here for the best deal - it was still Eon but another deal - I forget the details but significantly cheaper. Basically the stanard rate is a rip-off for people who don't get round to checking.
On the subject of meters, we had a water meter installed last year and after the first few months they (Thames Water) lowered our monthly payments from £22 to £11. In the Autumn we had a leaking pipe under the floor and it took us quite a while to notice and fix it. The meter reading resulted in an extra £200 or so in charges but Thames Water don't even want to put our direct debit back up to the previous level! They even wrote to us and aksed if we knew why our consumption had shot up. Fair play to 'em.
I If you bothered to look you'd see the dividends are not that brilliant considering its a regulated industry. The real greedy b***ards are oddly enough in the socialist state of Russia who are charging way over the top for their exported gas supplies. Still it's easier to blame capitalists for greed isn't it?
If you bothered to read some quality newspapers, you'd know that far from being 'socialist" Russia is the most rampantly, savagely capitalist country you could find. And has been for 20 years. Still it's easier to blame foreigners for a situation which British people voted for.
Only read the first half dozen posts but regarding them hardly coming to read my meters and sitting on my money to make interest: Works opposite for me. Yes, they also only read my meters once or twice a year but my direct debit Falls short of my actual bills (esp in winter). I know this and put the extra in my savings account, earning me interest until they get a true reading. They constantly ask me to increase my monthly payments and I always say "I will next month" and will continue to do this whilst I can. My little way of screwing them over. Giving it to the man. :-)
I am a meter reader for Scotish and Southern we read the meters every 6 months. As far as i know, it is not a legal requirment to read your meters once a year. The only thing I can think that your problem could be, is that all though your meter was read today - it could have not been in the billing dates that your address is on, if that makes sense. Energy companies have billing cycles and if your meter is read out of this cycles it will mean estimated bills. As for using agencies all meter readers for SSE are employed by SSE. Hope this helps.

I think legally it is every two years but most energy suppliers do it at least once a year.
