Jermaine Defoe v our Res Team

edited November 2011 in General Charlton
My Spurs fan mate gleefully announced that Defoe scored 4 or 5 goals against us this afternoon in what appears to be a very strong Spurs team against our young reserves. Anyone heard anything?

  • Was 5, ended 6-1.
  • Guess with all the international breaks they had to give some of the stronger players a run out, the tw@ts.
  • At least it shows our lads how far they have to go

    not necessarily all bad imo

  • Youga and Fortune?

  • Parnaby would be good at this level, plus good competition to Solly.

"Parnaby is currently on trial at legendary South East London based
Charlton Athletic (you stay classy). He played in a CAFC XI friendly Vs
North London Whites on Tuesday 22nd November 2011."
    Haha

    Haha
whoever did that should do it for all of the other Charlton players, its quality.
  • Parnaby is probably too good for this level. Injury hampered, but is a decent player from what I can recall. Competition for Solly?
  • Who scored for us?

  • No Alonso.
  • thought i read the other day that parnaby went on trial at millwall?

    No Alonso.
    he's not real - FACT. ; )
  • They fielded 6 Full internationals! In a reserve game. Christ!
  • I reckon Alonso has gone and the club just has not anounced it yet, unless he is injured and we have not heard but it does smell like we may get a "by mutual consent" quote on the termination of his contract in January.
  • Defoe v Doc, I'm surprised it wasn't more!
  • Something you may not know, the last time Defoe scored 5 in a game was against Wigan in the 9-1 game at WHL on Sunday 22nd November, 2009.  Exactly 2 years to the day.  Freaky.

  • do you think each time Defoe scored he ran to the one Charlton fan and his dog and cupped his ear to him?

This game was originally scheduled for 12 noon, but was put back to 12.30 and did not kick-off until 12.50. By that time the mist had lifted and while the ground was slippery it was clear. The game was held on the upper pitch and as usual with these games there were plenty of scouts looking for players. There was a teamsheet for the match but it was a little short on names. I hope that the Charlton side is correct as they had Doherty down as No.5 which I could see was wrong. Monday night's subs got a run out with the first team coaching staff watching as well as David Pleat.

Spurs lined up with Gallas and Bassong at the back with Fredericks at right back and Day on the left. Livermore and Sandro started in the centre of midfield with Falque on the right flank and Pienaar on the left. Giovani supported Defoe up front. There were only three subs listed but we used five.

Spurs kicked off the first half attacking the south end and Defoe soon showed his appetite for goal, firing wide. He was on the score sheet when he blasted a low drive through the keeper. Pienaar fired over before Defoe drove wide. Defoe got the ball near the halfway line and drove forward to the edge of the area before unleashing an unstoppable drive for the second goal.

Charlton managed to work the ball down the right and Smith met the cross strongly with his head but Jansson saved well. Falque popped up on the left to fire in an effort that Sullivan saved to his left with Defoe snatching at the rebound to lift it over the bar. Falque then fired wide from the right before Gallas went off to be replaced by Mason who went into midfield with Livermore dropping into the back four.

Giovani played in Falque, who drove wide. Ferdericks got down the right and cut inside to play the ball into the path of Defoe for the striker to crash home for his hat-trick. Charlton won a corner on the right and Doherty at the far post headed it back towards the near post for Benson to head home.

Spurs made one change for the second half with Parrett replacing Sandro in the centre of midfield. Defoe carried on from where he left off with an effort that was wide, and then drew a save from Sullivan before setting up Giovani, who lifted the ball over the bar. Bassong got in on the act meeting the ball from a corner but Sullivan saved. Parrett fired wide from distance before Spurs scored again. Fredericks got down the line and crossed for Giovani to draw a save from the keeper with Defoe following up to put the loose ball in the net for his fourth. This was followed quickly by his fifth driven in low to the keeper's right.

Sherwood immediately replaced Defoe with Bostock and a triallist came on for Pienaar. Falque then saw his low drive deflected for a corner before Mason drove in number six from the edge of the area. Charlton made a number of changes and tried to push forward which saw Evina draw a save from Jansson. Pope saved a free kick from Parrett before ex-spur Doherty got on the end of a left wing cross at the far post only to see Livermore clear his header off the line. That was the last action of the game as Spurs ran out easy winners.

This was a good work-out for our first team squad players which did not tax them much. The fact that Gallas left the field early may not be good. There was no sign of Pavlyuchenko. Perhaps he is injured? I did not get to see the U-17's play Orient as that was behind closed doors. Tomorrow I will see the U-19's play FC Basle at the Lodge in the NextGen Series game.

    · Spooky footnote - Jermain Defoe scored his 5 goals against Wigan on the same date (22nd November) two years ago - Spurs 9 Wigan 1 - 22.11.09
