Yesterdays Attendance

edited November 2011 in General Charlton
Looking at this mornings papers it is noticable that the attendance at yesterdays game was the 4th highest outside of the Premeriship (although QPR v's City only beat us by 590). Only Cardiff v's Palace (22,032) - Hull v's Hammers (21,756) and Sheff Wed v's Brentford (18,107) had higher attendances.
If we continue to deliver results like yesterday and playing attractive football surely we will begin to push 20k on a regular basis as the word spreads that the Valley is well worth a visit.
Lets hope that during the two 'live' TV games this month we can continue to play attractive football and bring even more people back to the ground. I would like to think that Messers Slater and co. are more than happy with their investment so far, and that any strengthening that CP may want to do in January (not saying that he does or will) is given the go-ahead. The prize being even higher attendances in the Championship?

  • That's top support from a League one outfit.

The support this year has been the best in years. I hadn't felt that good going 5-0 up yesterday in so long with Charlton.
    Long may it continue!
  • Success breeds bigger attendance, don't forget that Airman said that we gave out less comps yesterday and PNE only had 550 ish.  So with the comps and a decent team doing well we could well add bums on seats to 20k +

    Shame Udders are on TV
  • I was a bit fed up that the Chesterfield gate didn't hit the heights we all hoped for.

BUT, the attendance v Carlisle caught my eye as it was 1700 up on the Tranmere game, and yesterday we were another 800 up on that.

The away fans have numbered more or less the same in those 3 games so it is a pretty fair test I reckon.

I took one extra with me yesterday, and I saw a mate who usually goes to Ebbs/Drtfd/Wllng - so I took this as a sign that things are going the right way.

The "extra" spend was hopefully good yesterday, as it seemed to be v busy at the kiosks etc.

If 1000 more fans turn up and part with 30 quid each - we could hire Tevez for a day with the extra dosh ! :)

  • I have a feeling that in the case of Huddersfield, TV or no TV, most of the current support will turn out for it. It's a game you simply have to go to, and many arrangements and alterations to routines are being planned to enable folk to get to it.

I also think the team will go for it, and if we lose so what? This is a game set up to be a real contest and not particularly a chess match or a percentage game, at least not from our perspective.

  • I took a friend and his son for their first visit to The Valley yesterday ( Arsenal supporters ) and they were really impressed with not only the team but the stadium and the atmosphere. I think we may have some converts !

On average the "extra spend" is worth about £1 profit per spectator to the club, once you've deducted costs and VAT. So while this is not to be dismissed, it's pretty minimal next to the ticket revenue and the possibility of a repeat ticket sale.

Looking at the three main variables - away sales, home sales and comps - I don't see another 20,000 crowd at The Valley before Sheffield United on Jan 21st at the earliest, although I'm happy to be proven wrong.

  • Airman, who knows we may draw Arsenal at home in the third round of the cup if we make it that far!

I took an Arsenal fan to and he now supports Charlton - Ah nicking fans feel's so great.
  • Wolves had just over 2,000 today...does anyone know what that was all about (i know they have had stadium refurbishments, is it to do with that?)

20,000 odd crowd, declare about 2,000, hope no-one will notice..very clever.

  • Haha yep...just got told by Wolves fan that it was over 23,000....just a typo as Smithy said.
  • I know there were a few freebies given to the local primary schools as I know of about 8 that went on these.  But am sure they will be back after that performance.

There is massive potential for Clubs like us to profit from this. There must be literally thousands of youngsters in our area who support the top teams, and only see them , if at all, once in a blue moon. I took one Arsenal and one Spurs supporter on Saturday and I'm sure that one of them will be back. He is fifteen, and I'm sure that the live experience of being at a game could quickly become a habit. I also pointed out to his Mum how safe and easy it is for him and his friends to use the Charlton Coach. Goals draw crowds, so we need to take advantage of our form this season plus the many seats available at every game to gain maximum benefit. Thinking caps on Charlton.

  • It's all part of the plan for us to rise like a Phoenix from the flames to achieve world football domination....hopefully!
