Hudds Run - a positive thing?

edited November 2011 in General Charlton
Might sound a little weird but could this Huddersfield run thing being working for us in the short term, I have a mate who has a season ticket up there and he was saying before yesterday that it is beginning to overshadow the idea of winning the league and that the team and to a degree the crowd, are trying to avoid loosing more than gaining three points. He pointed to goals drying up recently and key players dropping deeper to defend when leading by a single goal (for what its worth he also said that he thought we would drop away over Christmas as we have struggled in recent weeks, losing to Stevenage and all that, so shows how much he notices outside of Yorkshire!)

Adding a little weight to the theory was our own form when unbeaten in 12 etc pre Stevenage that wasn't as impressive since we have stopped talking about a run and the last four games have been a joy to watch,

  • I'm finding it hilarious. It's as if they are Barcalona, Man U in the ninties or Brazil 70.

It is the bleeding third division, a division they can't get out of.

This run hasn't got them promoted, hasn't even got them to the top of the league. Great invincibles don't draw at home to Walsall.

What he said.   run or no we are 5 points above them.    Sure we'll have another "poor" game or two sometime but we have a cushion now
  • I hope they draw next time out to take the record outright.  I don't mind them having their little bit of glory and it will look all the more impressive when we blow them away on the 28th.  The media are playing so attention to them I think everyone will sit up and pay attention to us after that.
  • Interesting thought that Hudds are more concerned about not losing than winning. If it is the case  we should be satisifed with a draw in front of the cameras since whilst we will exorcise our frustrations against Walsall on 10th December they will be really worried about conceding all thre points against the Cherries on the 10th  and will settle for a draw.

I can understand the logic  which to some extent is pervasive but couldn't honestly believe that the  likes of Peltier and Rhodes would allow that to affect their thinking could I? Lets hope that Notts County can force a draw and the uncertainty remains until we meet them. A loss to us could break a psychological dam and they go on a winning or losing streak. This match could be bigger than a six pointer.
  • When we won the Championship, it was the sky game against Hudds that convinced me that we were going to.
  • I think we might be making too much of this - in the last 6 games they've only drawn 2 (yesterday and away at scunthorpe) and won 4.

Yesterday they had 23 shots to Walsall's 8 and against Scunny they had 13 shots to 8 - so not really defensive. They are professionals and I'm sure they are focused on promotion only at the moment - maybe if they get close to Arsenal's record the jitters will appear but that won't affect them until a few games after ours.

Didn't we lose that one?  I would like Udders to pick up points in their next game, hate people on here saying we will smash their record - fate loves being tempted and with it being on TV its not going to be easy.  Hope we do beat them on 28th, but then I want them to carryon picking up points as we can do with Sheff U, Wed etc dropping points not just to us but someone else. Charlton 1st Udders second in May would suit me
  • Huddersfield first, us second would suit me come May!
  • Hudds are obviously a very decent team. You don't go unbeaten for that long without having something about you. The psychological problem that I think they will have is that even going unbeaten for so long and yet they can't reel us in. Three points for a win is what is important and the desire to get a win should always be paramount. Three games, two draws and a win gives you five points and unbeaten. Three games, a loss and two wins gives you six points. I know what I would rather have.

The 2-1 win up at their place in December was also on sky.

Remember that one for 2 reasons....

Johnny Robinson's great goal and the fact I was watching on TV as my dear Dad had passed away a few days before Christmas, hence felt I shouldn't make the trip for Mum's sake..

  • Bear in mind that the aim is to get promotion and not to become champions...though it would of course be pleasant to do so! Surely a Huddersfield side beating all of our promotion rivals and putting us further away from 3rd place is better than one that is giving our rivals more.

Ideally we want them to beat the other top teams but lose/draw to lower teams but we cant have everything it is in ours hands to keep playing well scoring goals and winning the league for ourselves

    +1.

They quite simply look like they're scared to lose. The Walsall goal where the guy ran half the length of the pitch without being challenged because they didn't want to give away a free kick shows that they don't have the in-built confidence that we have. Also Yeovil caned them last week without being able to score. Looking forward to the 28th!
  • I can't wait to end that run. We do that and this league is practically ours for the taking.
  • Spot on East Stand - COYR
  • The mathematics is simple. two points from two draws is not as good as three points from one win one lose.
  • I think a the match between us and hudders could be huge mentally. if we win and kill their run we will have a huge chance of winning the league with the confidence we will get from that. if they win they may go onto win the league. if its a draw i think things will carry on as they are for now with us top
  • I think there is a lot in the theory of Huddersfield not wanting to lose so decreasing their chances of a win. If they don't lose the next game they have set the record - I think it is a shallow record for them as they got beat in the play off final and the records count that as they are still in league one otherwise, but well done to them all the same - I think our players will be itching to be the ones to beat them and I would have thought that we wil be strong favourites at the Valley.

I remember the one we did lose - they scored quite a good goal early on, and we went on to have something like 23 shots on target, without scoring.  If I remember rightly, a win for us would have sealed promotion/the league.  Good times.  They were top when we beat them in the other game, and in the end they didn't even make the playoffs.

I just think it hilarious that this is all the media keep harping on about & ignoring the fact that we are slowly pulling away.......

you can go through a whole season without losing and still get relegated - 46 draws isn't much help - its wins that matter !!

We must such a poor team because we have lost a game this season and Huddersfield haven't

  • Of course winning against Huddersfield would send out a big statement. However if we get beat there is still a long way to go.

If they sell Rhodes in January for whatever reason then that will be a bigger dent to them than any team could do.
  • Our boys are always a good bet as run busters. Opposition with10 losses on the trot, guarantee we will capitulate. If the Terriers don't lose their next game, we will beat them.
  • They were top when we played them in the 2nd division in 2000. We beat them and finally finished top and they finished 8th. We spent the next seven seasons in the 1st Division (Prem). The next season they went down to the 3rd Division (L1). Two years later they went down the the 4th Division. They have never since returned to the two top divisions.

What if we beat them again this time around? Or what if they beat us!?
  • they could lose to notts county in their next game! fitting way to stop them taking the record from their neighbours in nottingham eh,,,,,,,! how many times do you hear of a run equalled but not beaten.  If they do get over the hurdle however, we'll give them a good test at the valley
  • i hope they draw with notts county then we beat them
