then to book Hamer for sending the ball back in the general direction of the half way line
LOL. Agree that the booking was silly but I don't think you can say he kicked it in the general direction of the half way line when it ended up halfway up the east stand.

Covering defender. Not a red but how he wasn't booked is baffling
covering defender has to be in addition to the keeper, not instead of surely? i think if you've gone round the keeper it has to be a clear goalscoring opportunity. I thought at the time it was a clear red card offence but as others have said it looked like the ref didn't see it properly and only gave the pen cos of the linesman
having said all that, i'm not sure it would have weakened their team if he had got sent off !
Just seen Oldham's game with Bury. Oldham keeper given a straight red for a far less dangerous challenge, with a defender coming round to clear up just like Preston today.
People going on about there being a covering defender are missing the point that it was a dangerous and reckless challenge in its own right and therefore could easily have been a red. He seemed to go in two footed. To not even get booked was ridiculous.
Can't really comment on that incident as I was chatting to the guy next to me and turned around to see Kermit flying through the air. But must say I thought the ref today was pretty poor.
I thinking if it happened when the game was 0-0, then the ref might had sent him off. As the score was 2-0, with awarding a pen, it could soon be 3 and it was still the first half. Then it could be a cricket score. I can't think of any other reason why he didn't send him off.
When you see the Oldham keeper sent off, he does make you laugh.
Did you not think it was a clear goal scoring opportunity? I don't understand how refs, pundits and some fans can't understand this rule. If the challenge is in the penalty box or the centre circle it's immemorial if you're denying a clear goalscoring chance. Ridiculous decision. Refs need to do their job.
It was an obvious goalscoring opportunity regardless whether a defender got back. Kermit was past the keeper. I reckon if it had happened in the centre circle the guy would have got a straight red anyway.
I thought a few times the ref was feeling sorry for just how big the gap between the two sides was, and we didn't even get into top gear.
Having watched this on tv now a good few times I have changed my opinion. It was two footed and he should have gone. Still not a clear goal scoring opportunity in my opinion but that not the issue now. It was dangerous play and agree with others that had that challenge been made anywhere else on the field it would have got a straight red. In the light of this it's even more astonishing that he didn't even get shown a yellow.
