  • reads like the shirt is still Green's
  • Very healthy competition all over the pitch for starting places, none more so than at right midfield. Bodes very well for the season.
  • Like the Spanish spelling of the word "manager" in the article, adds a bit of class.

Why do we insist on calling right wingers right mid-fielders.

Maybe in Wagsaffs case that has some merit but certainly not in Green's...he get's a nosebleed if he has to come back over the halfway line. He's very much a traditional style winger.........which (having been my playing position back in the day) I love to see. Sadly it's something of a dying art these days.

  • Funnily enough, I look at it the other way around. Green plays from the Right Midfield position, looking to receive the ball to feet and get in early crosses. Wagstaff works up and down the right flank as a winger, looking to get past the full back and attack the space in behind with the ball or running onto through balls into space. Wagstaff is more direct, but Green has better quality on his crosses.

Are you going back to 2-3-5, when wingers were told to stay on the halfway line? My primary school teacher was still using the WM in 1970, four years after Alf Ramsey's 4-3-3 in the 66 final.
  • I thought this was a tad unfair:

Scott started, scored a great goal, followed it up with another goal but
hadn’t scored from the second game of the season until last Saturday up
    at Hartlepool.

If goals are the criteria then surely Green is out on his ear? 3-0 to Waggy on the goals front, not to mention that Green is managing to pick up a yellow card every other game, which means Waggy should get his chance again shortly when the first suspension kicks in.

Still, it's very nice to have good competition for places in the squad.

To me that sounds like Powell is saying that Green is his first choice, but as Waggy scored a couple he couldnt drop him.

They bring different qualities to the team- but a big part of Waggy's contribution is his goals - Green will be expected to get his fair share too but I think assists is what Chrissy expect from him. they are hard to compare as they are very different but it is nice as a manager that you can  make a real change - depending on the effectiveness of opponents in countering your style.
