  • I think its a joke that this is in the papers as dragging down football. Its only a few fingers.
  • They must have had a camera stuck on her.

    One finger salute.

  • As soon as MattD mentioned it was in a "newspaper" I knew it would be that one.
Its like they had the go ahead to write a story about the derby, but with no stabbings or riots this was the best they could come up with. "People swear at football shocker". Geez.
  • To be fair, I didn't realise David Tennant was a Sheff Wed supporter (left hand side in white top).

    Would ya? ; )

In the sun today talking about about how 2 wolves fans p*ssed on the WBA pitch followed by disgraceful scenes of fans flicking fingers at each other.

So flicking a few fingers is now disgraceful scenes. Do me a flavour. Doubt they will show the manchester fans rucking this weekend

Of course not. No one involved with Manure can do anything wrong...
  • I just read that in addition to 28,000 at Bramall lane, another 12,000 were at Hillsborough watching on a big screen.

    Mightily impressive.

The Charlton v Millwall 4-4 attendance two years ago was, what, 18,000?

But Prague, its 2 teams in one city.
I'm sure if there was one team each for North, South, East and West London we'd see huge crowds too.
As it is we have very good support in this league, most just can't be bothered with the agro a game against Millsmall might bring.
  • whats the population of sheffield compared to the population of sarf london

  • Sheffield - 555,500

    South London - 2,835,200

  • Fair enough. I still think it makes a difference having so few local teams. Maybe just to the mentality of the supporters.

Of the population of Sheffield I wonder how many are born and bred there and have family connections to either club.

Of the population of South London I wonder how many are born and bred there and have family connections to the local clubs.

    Lies, damn lies and statistics.

  • well we all know away fans at the valley live in london , that's why their numbers are decent
  • We used to get 24,000 home fans to FAPL games. The vast majority of them who didnt come to the Millwall game I mentioned, have not been lost to rival London clubs such as West Ham or whatever. They just can't be assed to support Charlton in the Third Division. Whereas effectively 40,000 people in Sheffield were ready to turn out for their Third Division derby. I'm not necessarily knocking us, but I think it is a reminder that in the big Northern cities like Sheffield Leeds or Newcastle, people will get up off their asses and go to the game whichever league they are in. Such clubs will always bring more to the Valley than we will to their place. I just think we should salute their commitment to their teams.
  • agreed prague

They had a long way to travel on Sunday then.

Double agreed. I wasn't knocking their support, quite the opposite, I'm very impressed. I just don't think a its a fair comparison, places like Sheffield, Newcastle and Southampton with places like London.
  • I live in Gravesend and most of the residents here support their home town team....................Always seeing Lech Poznan flags flying. ;-)
  • Why can't someone ever say that someone had a good attendance without although the usual bores pressing repeat of posts they have posted a million times before.

  • Thought Millwall Charlton was a sellout ?

  • Yes, they did have a very good attendance.  Well done to the folks of Sheffield for getting behind their teams.

I think comparisons with us v Millwall are a little unfair though.  London has 14 league teams, this is far greater (double in fact) than any other city in England and probably in the world.   Imagine what it must be like working in a place like Sheffield in the run up to a derby match.  The whole town would be talking about it, because almost everyone (save a small minority of Rotherham) will support one of those two teams.  Given that situation it would be surprising if they didn't sell loads of tickets.  Now compare that with working in London.  Even if you supported one of the big prem teams: Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, no amount of workplace discussion is going to have the same effect because lots of people will still support someone else.

The real measure of how well supported a team is, is not how many come to watch when they're playing their rivals, it's how many come to watch for a dreary fixture against bottom of the league opposition.  In fact, the perfect measure is, how many people come to watch when you are at home to a struggling Bristol City side.   Well done to the Sheffield sides, they've done well. But that doesn't reflect poorly on us at all.
  •

United are one up against Preston.

  • Utd winning 2-1 now
  • Sheff U 3-2 up now
  • come on Preston get an equalizer and level the spoils.
  • 4-2 now
  • Agreed with one point there, Rhodes will not be at Huddedsfield come end of January.
  • Love how they judge us on our performance against them when I distinctly remember them being pretty shocking.
