As soon as MattD mentioned it was in a "newspaper" I knew it would be that one.
Its like they had the go ahead to write a story about the derby, but with no stabbings or riots this was the best they could come up with. "People swear at football shocker". Geez.
We used to get 24,000 home fans to FAPL games. The vast majority of them who didnt come to the Millwall game I mentioned, have not been lost to rival London clubs such as West Ham or whatever. They just can't be assed to support Charlton in the Third Division. Whereas effectively 40,000 people in Sheffield were ready to turn out for their Third Division derby. I'm not necessarily knocking us, but I think it is a reminder that in the big Northern cities like Sheffield Leeds or Newcastle, people will get up off their asses and go to the game whichever league they are in. Such clubs will always bring more to the Valley than we will to their place. I just think we should salute their commitment to their teams.
Double agreed. I wasn't knocking their support, quite the opposite, I'm very impressed. I just don't think a its a fair comparison, places like Sheffield, Newcastle and Southampton with places like London.
Why can't someone ever say that someone had a good attendance without although the usual bores pressing repeat of posts they have posted a million times before.
Yes, they did have a very good attendance. Well done to the folks of Sheffield for getting behind their teams.
I think comparisons with us v Millwall are a little unfair though. London has 14 league teams, this is far greater (double in fact) than any other city in England and probably in the world. Imagine what it must be like working in a place like Sheffield in the run up to a derby match. The whole town would be talking about it, because almost everyone (save a small minority of Rotherham) will support one of those two teams. Given that situation it would be surprising if they didn't sell loads of tickets. Now compare that with working in London. Even if you supported one of the big prem teams: Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, no amount of workplace discussion is going to have the same effect because lots of people will still support someone else.
The real measure of how well supported a team is, is not how many come to watch when they're playing their rivals, it's how many come to watch for a dreary fixture against bottom of the league opposition. In fact, the perfect measure is, how many people come to watch when you are at home to a struggling Bristol City side. Well done to the Sheffield sides, they've done well. But that doesn't reflect poorly on us at all.

One finger salute.
So flicking a few fingers is now disgraceful scenes. Do me a flavour. Doubt they will show the manchester fans rucking this weekend
Sheffield - 555,500
South London - 2,835,200
Of the population of Sheffield I wonder how many are born and bred there and have family connections to either club.
Of the population of South London I wonder how many are born and bred there and have family connections to the local clubs.
Lies, damn lies and statistics.
agreed prague
They had a long way to travel on Sunday then.
Thought Millwall Charlton was a sellout ?
United are one up against Preston.
Interesting views on our promotion chances..
