Chris Powell - the new tinker man?

edited October 2011 in General Charlton
It wasn't broken and didn't need fixing but since that great win at Sheff Utd he has made four uninforced changes. We look a worse side without Hayes. He may not score enough goals but his hold up play and link up play with BWP make him an important part of the team. Ok Kermy was knocking on the door but seems more of an impact player. Waggy was under pressure from Green but Danny has failed to impress at all in the last two games. Finally why was Solly dropped today? If it was a height issue then that was a big mistake today. Morrison looked like a rabbit in the headlights today and wasn't facing a giant down the right but Stacy Long. We had a winning formula but that as now been disrupted unnecessarily. Been disappointed with CP the last two games.

  • Can't disagree with that Large.

I understand why Kermy was given a chance as he'd earned it with those 3 excellent cameos off the bench.....but as you state, it wasn't broken why fix/change it?

I say again that dropping Solly didn't make a blind bit of difference to the result today, it wasn't that area of the pitch that was under pressure or needs any after match scrutiny because Morrison did OK.....though I do agree it was a strange decision not to start him.
  • The best post of the day ! He may not be a prolific goal scorer but Hayes brings the midfield into the game and his movement causes defenders all sorts of problems, but now Chris Powell has  a problem ........how do you change it back when you have gone out on a limb to accommodate certain players and also has he damaged team spirit by tinkering just as that Tosser Pardew managed too.
  • I understand subbing Green for Wagstaff but Taking off Stephens for Evina and Taylor for Hayes?

I don't understand bringing on Hayes in 88th minute when we're losing 1-0?

Powell's tactics annoy me, he's defensive when we're winning and defensive when we're losing.

Bringing on a left back Evina for Stephens, I wasn't there but quessing Jackson (a goal scorer) was pushed back to allow Evina to play left wing??

Is Powell Tactically aware? I am not sure.

    Anyone else?

No he didn't drop Jackson back...in fact he threw almost everyone forward for the last 15 minutes or so....but with no success..too much hoof ball IMHO. Though Stevenage did pressure us all over the pitch, little or no skill from them but plenty of aggression and spirit.

Seems like teams have sussed us out, We're too slow passing the ball (too much tippy tappy stuff) passing passing going back then more passing. teams close us down quickly and when they have the ball they seem to break us down too quick.

Then we revert to Long ball football, Which neither of our strikers seem to like.

Still don't understand why Powell leaves it so late to make a sub.

There was a thread saying he's similar to Curbishley, He's not anything like Curbs, If you were having a bad game Curbs would sub you early not wait till 15mins to go.

  • Hope not.
  • making a sub woulnt have made much difference - we needed to change the mentality of the players on the pitch PASS the f**kin thing to a red shirt please!
  • I too am worried that teams have sussed us out; but maybe we're just set up better to play the stronger teams in this league, and we don't have a game plan against the weaker teams?
  • Not going out tonight?

    Nothing on telly?

I agree, we need to get dirtier, be a hard team.

Seems the refs always miss the dirty challenges against us anyways.

Nope skint, just forked out 80 notes on a NFL Wembley ticket.

    Should be a good game.

CP is essentially a rookie so there are going going to be some mistakes, but he has been backed and hopefully we will be in the championship next year with a quality manager with who has benefitted from a bit of a learning curve.

Wasn't there so can only speculate.

Evina is meant to be quick so presumably the rationale was pace to get behind tiring defenders and set something up for BWP. Obviously failed because we lost but I can understand the thinking.

I can see what you mean, but why wait until the 81st min to bring him on? and Hayes with 2 mins and some change left to make an impact?

I dunno, I like the man but not sure If he knows what he's doing.

From the Radio Kent commentary Stevenage were wasting time and 6 minutes were added on. Perhaps Powelly factored in that anticipated extra time?
  • One bad decision and Powell doesn't know what he's doing? He was King of the world this time last week. Maybe it's the Board's fault for not hiring a manager with 20-20 hindsight

so 2mins and some anticipated extra time, not really enough time is it?  4-3-3 and gone for it, thats what i would have done but who am I.

@Garrymanilow I've been unsure about Powell since he took over, should find a post or two from me at the end of last season. I love the guy hes a legend but I feel he has been a bit lucky with some of our results this season, Is he the man to take us up, I don't know only time will tell.

But I tell you what I do know, is that our second team isnt as great as we think, I feel it's time to dip into the loan market myself.

this - can't even be bothered to continue to read all the crap on here tonight, we had to lose sometime ...lets just all get over it and move on to next week
  • Incredible dropping solly, one of the best performers so far this season.

    Totally agree

It amazes me that after being unbeaten for 13 games Powell is now 'tactically unaware' or a 'rookie' ?? I would understand it if we just got slaughtered for 5 games in a row or had a neverending reign of poor performances but we haven't. We slipped up one game and I have faith that SCP will acknowledge what went wrong and fix it before we end up on a slump.
  • Solly and wagstaff was working and hayes makes things happens -problem is Chris P is making his own problems --we were poor in Midfield -he should have changed things at half time -sure he will think about it over the week and get it right.

Sad thing there was no charlton yourth player in the line up -and we are talking Div One footy here..

  • Not sure what's more depressing the results or the utter doom and gloom on here
  • We are changing our team around because we're worried about a team that was in the conference 2 years ago ? With the quality players that we brought in during the summer shouldn't we concentrate on playing our game & let others worry about us ? Very worrying.
  • Not sure what's more depressing the results or the utter doom and gloom on here

Can't see any doom and gloom. I just can't see the need for CP to have tinkered when there was nothing wrong. And I agree with charltonbob. Why should we worry about the other team. Let them worry about us. After all they have a lot more to worry about.
  • Totally agree with Large.  Our success was built on being able to field an unchanged team - and we all commented on  here about how fortunate that was and what a luxury etc.

I like Kermit, Green and Evina. They're good players and will get plenty of chances over a long season of 46 games. But totally baffled by the making of unenforced changes to a winning side this early in the season. Sod all this squad rotation nonsense. That's fine for  Chelsea and Man Utd with their vast resources. We're not in that league and we should simply play the best XI, until we are forced to change it.

I thought there was a quote from Powell himself earlier this season saying either that he did not believe in changing a winning side or there had to be a bloody good reason to do so. Can anyone supply the quote?

  • "we should simply play the best XI, until we are forced to change it."

Do we know or Chris Powell know what our strongest XI is? Not long ago many here and elsewhere said Green should come in for Wagstaff as he was the better player, despite our unbeaten run. I think Powell probably wasn't sure what our strongest XI was.

Be interesting to see if he continues with Green and Kermorgant or brings back either or Waggy and Hayes.
  • I think Powelly thinks he's on FM12 before it's been released

Thanks for that Diz , I reckon you've nailed it mate! :-0
