AFC Charlton or Northampton Addicks

edited October 2011 in General Charlton
Following up from the interview we did with an MK (Wimbledon) fan last week and the debate that has ensued as to whether MK have anything left of Wimbledon in them, if we were put in a similar position and CAFC relocated to Northampton and renamed Northampton Addicks for example, the badge changed and the kit colour changed would you follow the club or would you follow a new club called AFC Charlton playing in SE7 ? Personally I didnt choose to boycott and followed CAFC to Selhurst and Upton Park as I never felt the club lost its identity, it retained the badge, the shirt and thanks to the ongoing campaigns it never lost the desire to return home, but if it had of gone to Wimbledon way............

would you support northampton addicks or afc charlton if the situation arose ?

  • A different situation, the club itself remained intact when we moved, we simply gave up our home ground.

Had we followed the suggestion of Ron Noades and amlagamated with Palace then that would have been different. Most likely I would have supported them initially and then my suport would have faded once the Charlton players in the squad had been sold or retired.

  • Well when we were at selhurst it was under similar circumstances to those under which wimbledon were there - when they retained their support. I.e. that the ultimate objective was to try and return to Greenwich /surrounding area and Merton / surrounding area respectively. It was only when it was agreed to relocate Wimbledon completely that their support disappeared. I would follow Charlton and believe I would reluctantly continue to do so in the - god forbid - eventuality we had to do some sort of temporary groundshare again, but I would follow "AFC Charlton" if we were completely removed and relocated elsewhere aimed at an entirely new supporter base. Would not follow that club as it would not be the club the people the history etc of Charlton, it would be an entirely different entity regardless of legality. I don't believe fortunately it will ever, ever happen.

    Would go and support Millwall

    Bollocks!

     'Afc Charlton' for me.

  • Blackheath Rugby Club for me

    : - )
  • AFC but to be honest if it got to that stage I would probably not bother with the shambles that the game has become and take up cross stitch or something.

  • Leave the poor bloody MK Dons fan alone. He was clearly "confused".
  • Being as I live in the Northampton area it would be perfect for me to see Northampton Addicks regularly! ;-)
anyway, with our history, I can't see any chairman/board nutty enough to relocate us to the midlands!!!

  • Maidstones new Ground would be built by then. Five Minute walk from my house.
  • Dulwich Hamlet
  • ...basically the question I posed in the Wimbledon post but whatever...

I'm sure you get a mention in the rolling credits at the end.

To be honest, I'd struggle with either team as neither would be Charlton Athletic. So I'd probably just watch Ebbsfleet (local team) until AFC rise from the ashes, get into the football league before jumping on the bandwagon, saying I was there from the start.
  • Neither, I wouldn't go no more at all, I would more than likely go watch enfield town
  • It would be The Shrimpers for me
  • It would be The Shrimpers for me
It's a long way from Lancashire to Southend.
  • Certainly not the Northampton Addicks scenario ...... As a fan who has rellocated to IOW its bad enough getting to the Valley with a decent atmosphere and support, so to travel to AFC Charlton would be less of a pull, im sure i would always have an firm interest in them and an occasional visit but would not be like the obsession that is Charlton Athletic...... No doubt would be a more regular visitor at Southampton (Dont like pompey)
  • Tough one this... Don't think I'd bother with either AFC Charlton or Northampton Addicks. Maybe I'd go and watch Dartford - I hear it's a nice ground and they serve decent beer at a good price.
  • No Charlton. No interest in football.
I would watch other teams but the buzz when they score would not be there.
The sheer rush of adrenalin and excitement when the addicks score is like an orgasm or a night with the mistress
  • Quick correction to previous post i meant Mrs
  • I guess I'd start supporting Bromley.

  • I'd go and watch Plymouth, god knows they need the money.
  • AFC Charlton, would pretty much be the same club, I see AFC Wimbledon as the original wimbledon, just with a slightly different name.

The "well i'd probably support the club round the corner" is something i'd expect of nigels, not a group of fans that fought tooth and nail to get back to the valley and keep the club alive.
  • Can't see why the Dons don't now drop the AFC tag from their name as they are no longer Amatuer, unless of course they don't have the rights to use the name?

    Anyone know?

Does the "A" in their name stand for Amatuer ? I thought it was "Association" as in AFC Bournemouth ?
