Yann Kermorgant - note to commentators

edited October 2011 in General Charlton
How on earth do the commentators manage to pronounce his name like 'Kermergen'?

The first syllable is being pronounced correctly.

The second syllable has an 'o' in the middle as is pronounced as such, like the English 'more' not like the gift of 'myrrh' to baby Jesus.

The third syllable is the only one that should cause difficulty for English speakers. If you know how to say the French for 'glove' ('gant') then you've got it. Otherwise the 'g' is a hard sound like in English i.e. as in 'good', 'gone', 'god'. For the end sound just try to say the English 'gone' without pronouncing the 'n.'

On a slightly different topic, do other Charlton fans realise that this guy battled against leukemia at a young age and was forced to stop playing football for four years?

  • They will come Monday morning. The tabloiders grilled him on it for 5 long minutes.
  • On Wednesday the commentator pronounced his name as Yanker Magrant.

  • ffs somebody just ask him lol
  • I wonder how many French people know 'exactly' how to pronounce it....my guess is not that many.

As was said on here the other day, it's a Breton name originating from Northern France.

  • I don't think many French people would have a problem pronouncing it, and there wouldn't be much room for debate, to be frank.

It annoys me when French commentators don't make any effort to pronounce English names correctly too. I can understand not getting it exactly right but it seems as if they don't care. I find it disrespectful to the player to not even try.

Commentators and indeed anyone in the media have a responsibility to get things like this right, and that includes the Match of The Day panel with their 'could of went', 'a big ask', 'he done well' etc etc
