What on earth was the lino doing tonight ....?

edited October 2011 in General Charlton
In the build up to Brentford's 3rd goal, with play in the Charlton area, the lino clearly signalled offside.
And then a few seconds later put his flag down, as play continued.

Several players of both sides, who had seen the flag, hesitated. The Brentford player who scored had his back to the lino and wouldn't have seen the flag, put the ball in the net.

TV replays show that technically the goal was correctly given .......but Charlton players, led by Jackson, remonstrated with the referee - that they had been clearly distracted by the lino's flag, which had given an unfair advantage to Brentford.

Ignore the fact that it was a crap match and you can't be arsed about it;
or if Man U or Arsenal had been involved it would be a talking point until Christmas ........but the lino's actions did appear to effect the course of play, resulting in a goal.

Discuss.

  • Play to the whistle.

The raised flag means nothing until the whistle is blown.

Play to the whistle Oggy. I'm not accepting excuses from pro footballers about being put off by the lino's flag. No way it influenced the goal being scored anyway, Waggy was the only player close enough to stop it and he tried and failed.
  • Sure we know play to the whistle. You'll see I'm not debating that point.
Nor about the legality of the goal.

It was evident though that the lino's actions had an influence on play at that point and was a distraction to players.
  • another thing about the lino, he gave offside against them second half when Doherty played him on by about 5 yards(no exaggeration)

and gave them a throw wen the ball quite  leary didnt go out (waggy)
  • I thought the ref ruled the goal out and then reinstated the goal after speaking to the lino

YEP! Can't complain too much with that one.

I don't agree it did Oggy, Waggy tried to block the shot and failed as did Sullivan, no-one else was close enough to do anything about it regardless of whether they played on or not. If they did stop it was schoolboy stuff though even if it didn't actually change the outcome of the 'event'.

No mate, the ref just ran to the lineman to explain his reason for over-ruling him. Made the right decision, just made a bit of a hash of it. Glad it was ruled out. Didn't want a fight back and possible extra-time. Let good ol Brentford lose to yet another northern monkey team in the final.

  • Doherty didn't stop, it just looks that way. If you speed up the footage you can see he's actually sprinting. ;-)

  • Haven't seen any replays but from the west stand it looked like the ball ricoheted forward for brentford off a charlton player which the lino misread and the ref had seen it all happening and made a great decision to carry on and as it happened you knew the uneducated wouldn't realise the situation/rules and would start crying
We got away with a moody one v colchester last year
10 out of 10 to the ref for that quick thinking he knew what he saw and was quick to play on and made some of the players and fans look amateurish but you can excuse the fans
  • 1. The decision was correct

    2. Play to the whistle

    3. Don't think the flag made any difference re the goal

    4. We had not had a shot before hand and were 2-0 down so irrelevant in the context of the game whether it had ended 2 or 3-0.

    5. Not withstanding all of the above, if it had been a league game i would be fuming!!

  • Always play to the whistle.... as soon as flag went up the referee was signialling ignore it and waving his arms!!
  • Anyone know was it a pen?
  • Anyone know was it a pen?
nailed on and Alonso knew it
  • The lino made a mistake but put the matter straight..........which I suppose is fair enough at the end of the day.

Fortunately it didn't change the result and besides I think the guy would have scored anyway....... flag or no flag.

Thanks mate, looked weak from where I was sat but I didn't have me contacts in!
  • The shortest lino i have ever seen.
  • You haven't seen AFKA on a Sunday morning then.
  • The pass to the 'offside' player came off a Charlton player that's why it was overruled.
Also the lino was so small I'm surprised anyone saw the flag.

  • If its a goal , its a goal . At the end of the day the decision was correct.
  • No worse a decision than the Colchester farce last year.

Some you get, some you dont.

I believe this is what the officials thought, but in fact no player was in an offside position and it came off a Brentford player. So the officials got it right, but with an incorrect interpretation. Not that that matters.

    Cheers for your responses.

I wasn't ever questioning  the goal - TV replays showed the referee made the correct decision.

But the antics of the lino and the distraction caused to some players who saw him flag, was the point I wished to discuss........because it was apparent that it caused some players to lose concentration and take their eye off the ball.

It's happened a few times in matches that I've played in over the years - and it's a definite distraction to players.
As the Charlton players indicated when they protested last night.

Anyway, just a talking point about how situations off the ball can influence things.

  • it made up for Doc playing them 5 yards on side earlier in the game.

Also was it doc who played them on side again for this goal?
  • The right call was made, and you can't in all honest play the distraction card. The players are supposed to be concentrating on the game, the flag is for the ref's benefit and the whistle for the player's. Otherwise things could get silly with free kicks having to be retaken on ludicrous pretences.
