Paul Benson set to sign on loan from Charlton Athletic

Posted on October 1, 2011 by admin

According to the T&A Bradford City have made another attempt to sign striker Paul Benson on loan from League One side Charlton Athletic. The 31-year-old appears to be out of favour at the Valley and he has only featured in 3 games so far for the Addicks this season.

After joining the Addicks from Dagenham & Redbridge last August, Benson went on to score 10 times in 39 games in his debut season at The Valley but he has struggled to get into the side of late and he has just recovered from a broken finger. Apparently last month he rejected the opportunity to join Notts County, Bournemouth, Rotherham United and Luton Town in order to fight for his place at The Valley but he is said to be keen to link up with former boss Parkinson at Valley Parade.

Earlier this month Charlton boss Chris Powell said: “I’ve been open with Paul that if his chances are limited, then we will look at the possibility of him going out. But I don’t want to do that and leave myself short, it has to be right for everyone. Obviously he spoke to clubs and declined moves, which is no problem.”

The T&A reports that City’s Archie Christie was in London yesterday to meet Charlton owner Tony Jimenez and executive vice-chairman Peter Varney to discuss an emergency three-month loan deal for the player.

  • I thought he was out for several more weeks after his hand op?
  • With the arrival of Smith and the success enjoyed by Kermogant, Benson's CAFC days are over, at least as a 1st team player. Presuming he's on a nice contract with us for the next few months he might as well go and try to resurrect a career elsewhere on loan, as much as I despise the loan system it would be best for a decent player to go to a manager who knows and appreciates him.
  • I like the guy, could easily play for a lesser team in League One.

He'll bang them in at Bradford, good luck to him.
  • He's not going to get anywhere near the first team now is he, so good luck to him, just didn't happen for him.
  • Good luck Paul, won't forget your overhead kick away to Colchester last season.
  • I can't help but feel a little aggrieved though that he failed to agree terms when we were in line for a transfer fee (rumoured to be £150k) but now he can go out on loan and we will receive nothing for him, especially if he is going to end up with the manager that paid £250k to bring him to Charlton in the first place.

Wish the bloke nothing but the best wherever he can get a gig. He's a perfectly honest jourenyman who was the best we could afford under the old dysfunctional regime  but  is now surplus to requirements at the Valley. However, I have to agree with KHA' s comment above: I wish he had gone to Notts County and we had got the fee when Powell tried to offload him only a few weeks ago.

That said, if he's fit and he rejoins Parky before Saturday, I hope he brings the beleagured Bradford boss his first win at the seventh attempt this weekend.

Fair view. Although we can request a loan fee if we do let him join Bradford on loan, so there is still hope of us getting something back for him.
  • I wish him all the best whether he goes to Bradford or somewhere else, or whether he decides to bide his time in the hope of getting a game with us.  He's always tried his best and has got some good goals along the way.  Cheers Paul.

I doubt if Smith was considered as too much of a threat by Benson. Nor even Euell, as for some time he has been played primarily as an attacking midfielder.

Sure, it might have been financially prudent for the club to have cashed in on Benson when the opportunity was there - but to be fair to Benson, he probably reckoned he still had a decent chance of making the matchday 16 at Charlton. And at the time, but for his recent injury, he may have made the bench.

But Kermogants arrival and subsequent huge impact, means even Benson
must see his chances of a 1st team place well and truly disappearing
over the horizon. But you never really know in football, do you?

  • would have liked to see him play with green, probs could have scored a few, if this is true good luck benno
  • yes, good luck to him and Parky I say.
  • Much as I like the guy, he was never fast and agile enough to replace BWP. Now Kermit is on the way to out-Hayesing Hayes, Benson is at the very most going to be a bit part player, even Euell would likely get the nod over him due to versatility. Good luck Benno in whatever happens.
  • Don't feel aggrieved at all that he did not go to Notts County, he was signing a longer contract there than would be a loan,at the end of this season he will be a free agent able to go back to daggers or a local team, in the meantime he may have to settle with a monday to friday hotel life
  • Not quite the Charlton hero that Parky promised in the Bromley meeting about this time last year...but then Parky also promised that about Francis!!
  • Good Luck Benno!

    Very sensible.

The difference between the two is Francis was given a chance, Benson has not been and now we are in a different situation won't be and does not need to be.

He's not been given a chance by either manager for a reason
  • Our most expensive signing last year. He did ok, but fourth choice now. Let him go, we've moved on to bigger and better.

  • Keeps him fit as our emergency striker if injuries strike. Suits us really.
