I am going with a group of pals to Sofia, Bulgaria, in November, has anybody got any tips of where is good to go? Thanks

  • I was there for the recent England game, the town centre is very nice (and cheap), you'll be spoilt for choice for bars etc so would just try your luck. Local lager was nice too.
  • Cheers AD, how much are we talking for a pint / local equivalent?
  • about 80p a pint and the food is cheap too, bit of a dull city though.
  • Cheers FoD, happy with the price of bev, not so much with the dull comment.

  • I think FoD is right about how the city looks, but not if he means the nightlife. Which to be fair is not as easy to find because Sofia had to completely rebuild its nightlife after the fall of communism, and the city centre is a bit of a jumble.

One of my best mates is Bulgarian and since he has made a small fortune in the spirits and tobacco import biz, he has to know all the hottest places. Give me an idea of your ages and the types of places you like and I'll get him to give you some tailor-made recommendations.

The tottie is eye-watering and not afraid to show it :-)

  • Cheers PA, just sent a message to your inbox.

Hence England singing 'you're shit, but your birds are fit' ;-)
  • The birds are something else, but not Croatian standard, or...er... South London... *cough*... We found a steak house overlooking a pool, heaven!
  • Am having my stag there in March so let me know how you get on

What's your England Fan Number? There's a extra cap awarded for reporting people singing those kind of songs or for tapping the fence between the home and away fans ;-)

  • i went 20 years ago, scary place at that time just coming out of communism bit lawless. It was cheap as chips. Girls are stunning all fit dark hair dark skin. I was offered a mother and daughter for £10 for the night, my girlfriend thought it was hilarious.

Thing is, did your gf stump up the tenner?
I too was there in summer 1989. Sofia reminded me of a once beautiful woman gone to seed and out of makeup. Sub-machine gun toting gendarmes everywhere. I am told that Sofia has undergone great improvement as has all of once 'communist' E Europe. Lots of girls and ladies still available, but for a tenner? .. no chance
  • the russians controlled every part of bulgaria, and it was a russian pimp that offered me the girls, would have loved to but obviously couldnt. I went 1992 stayed 4 days in 5 cities stunning churches but i couldnt spend any money we went with 200dollars came back with 100. Train fares were 50p and you could get from 1 end of the country to the other for that. 3 course meal and beers was less than a pound and we stayed with local families that charged 2 dollars a night. And went to watch lokomotiv sofi away ruse.

So so cheap and not a lot to buy . I rather liked Varna on the Black Sea, where the tourist planes come in. The main problem @ that time and in every place was the constant request to change money on the black market. My wife came back once with a handfull of notes.. 'didn't i do well' said she .. indeed, she'd purchased for £20 a few hundred Greek Drachma worth about fourpence.

A pal of mine was in 'Sunny Beach' this summer. The photos show a new Benidorm/Costa Blanca where once there were elegant old hotels, woodlands and sand .. such is progress

In 1991 one of my Bulgarian mates who was in the tourist business proposed that I help him run karaoke in Albena and Golden Sands. So I did. I went out in July for three weeks. The karaoke was heaving. So on top of the classic beach holiday, I was running the karaoke some nights, which led to ridiculous numbers of opportunities for interraction with the female customers. I staggered home exhausted with a great suntan,  and a moneybelt with over three grand in takings, mainly pound coins, which I tipped on to the table in front of my speechless flatmates. I think that was the best holiday of my life.

Oh for more opportunities like that ! .. where is the new wild frontier?

If you private message me with what you are looking for, happy to give advice !
  • Returned from Sofia on Monday...........only just recovered. Average city, cracking nightlife, very very cheap, all in all a great weekend.
  • Any particular recommendations?

  • You have to go to Studenskiplatz, there are 4 clubs and about 5 bars close together, about 15 min cab journey, £3 cab, the easiest place to get an area of places to socialise.

  • Went skiing there about 15 years ago - Had a day in Sofia on last day and got a 3 course meal for 10 of us in sofia, with drinks for about £15, the lot.
  • It is still very cheap, good place to go for a weekend with pals.
