Crawley Town underlined their promotion ambitions by rejecting an 11th hour offer for star striker Matt Tubbs on transfer deadline day.
The Crawley News can exclusively reveal the reds turned down a £400,000 bid from Charlton Athletic for the forward who bagged 40 goals in all competitions last season
Addicks boss Chris Powell moved for the player after missing out on his first choice targets, but found Town unwilling to do business so late in the window.
It is understood manager Steve Evans was worried he would not have time to find a replacement, while the fee also failed to meet the Town directors valuation of the talisman.
Despite suffering a humiliating 6-0 defeat at Morecambe on Saturday, Crawley have made a good start to life in League Two and the club are desperate to hold on to their best talent.
Evans has refused to confirm which clubs made offers on deadline day, although the Reds boss confirmed the club turned down an approach.
It is also understood that Ipswich Town made an approach for Tyrone Barnett and the tractor boys have continued to watch the striker since the window closed.
"I received a number of offers from different managers" explained Evans. "These were for several players and the offers were varied"
"On each occasion I discussed the details with my directors and as a manager I was delighted to go back and turn down each of them"
"We had offers from the Championship and League One but none that were good enough. I would like to thank those respective clubs for keeping these offers confidential and we will respect their request by doing the same"
Since the transfer window closed Crawley have sold striker Wesley Thomas and brought back fans favourite Jon-Paul Pittman on loan from Oxford

Why not ? We would only offered that much if we thought he was worth it. Makes sense now why he turned down Bournemouth.
I heard they wanted a £1M. BTW we paid £1.5M for McLeod.
Thought this was about a loan move for robbie...
