Sponsoring the Rochdale game

edited September 2011 in General Charlton
On Saturday I'll be in the posh seats (well as posh as they get at Spotland) as myself, members of my family and some Rochdale fans we know are taking up a sponsorship package.

The background to this concerns a friend of ours who knows some London based Rochdale fans. While we were in the social club at Spotland last year we decided that if the two teams were in the same division the following season we'd sponsor the game up there.

We get our faces in the programme and we'll probably be on the pitch before the game as well. Following that its hoped that there'll be a few 'sitting on hands' moments for us as the Addicks crash a few goals in and get the win that keeps us top.

  • good idea, give your hard earned to another club.

we've got similar budgets so it's only fair

No, just showing friendship to fans and a club who exist in the shadow of the two Manchester giants and who will benefit from some extra income.

If it really matters to you we're thinking of sponsoring the return fixture and seeing as there's six of them and four of us we'll get more money from them than they do from us.
  • Dont have to explain yourself to him Tommy - i think its a nice idea a group of pals from two different teams.

Ta for that, we're hoping it'll be a good day whatever the result.

A smaller club in our division that have had nothing ever handed to them and have worked bloody hard to get to League 1

I'd rather put some money towards them than a Huddersfield or Sheffield club

    Jesus wept.
  • What you and your family do with your money is your business and is no concern of anyone else. Have a great day and hopefully 3 points as well.
  • Agree with Shirty - unless it's going to Palarse or Millsmall....
  • Have a good day M. and give it large in the directors box when we score.

  • Enjoy M... (& love to Mum).

  • Enjoy and give us a big wave please !
  • I really admire clubs like Rochdale (and their fans who could be glory hunting not far away in Manchester) and don't begrudge giving teams like them any of my hard earned whatsoever - I shall be doing my modest bit to that end tomorrow afternoon.

Hope you have a good one (including 3 lovely points for the Addicks) - I'll be sitting in the cheap seats!

Just wanted to report on our day of sponsoring the match. The Rochdale fans and officials we met couldn't have been more accomodating to us and were a real credit to their club. I can report that the posh seats at Spotland are or the nice padded variety and gave a nice view of the pitch. I managed to contain myself in the first half but did feel a bit of a lemon in the 2nd when all around me were up and cheering Rochdale's goals. I couldn't contain myself for the winner though but no-one gave us any bother.

We had a good chat to Jason Euell and Chris Powell in the tunnel after the game. In the bar our party got to present the man of the match trophy and there was a nice gesture to one of our Rochadle counterparts 8 year old son who got the job of handing the trophy over to David Ball, scorer of Rochdale's 2nd goal.

We left to visit a local hostelry and met Addickted Addick and some of his friends who was most impressed with what we'd done.

Finally, here is a commenorative plaque given to us by the club to mark our match sponsorship. The name we went under says it all as on the day we were 'Friends of Football'.

  • Nice tale Martyn. Well done.

So what did JE and CP have to say?
  • Jason told us how his move came about via a personal phone call from Chris- obviously it didn't take him long to to make up his mind to join us. He also said he's happy with things even though he's not starting as the first 11 are in such good form it's hard for anyone to break into it at the moment. We also talked about his time at Blackpool and said that Ian Holloway is one of the best (and craziest) coaches he's ever worked with.

Powelly was pleased to see us and gave Mum a big hug and a kiss. He's obviously delighted with the start but as all managers do he said that there's still a long way to go and lots can happen on the way.

Got to say it was one of the best days supporting the Addicks that I and Mum & Dad have ever had. Even the missus enjoyed it but I think that was because she got to see Waggy up close and in the the flesh!
  • Enjoyed reading this thread...cheers TD.
  • I had a PM from LargeAddick who wanted to set the record straight re his post:

    "Martyn,

My comment on the thread about you sponsoring the
Rochdale game was both churlish and very uncalled for. I apologise for
any offence it caused you. I know that you and your parents are
fantastic supporters of Charlton Athletic and very nice people to boot.
It was great what you did and forming friendships between supporters of
other clubs can only benefit football in general whilst as you say
helping teams like Rochdale survive. Once again apologies.

    Large"

That's fine with me and I've gone back to him saying all is OK with us.
  • M,

Good to see you and your clan in the Moorcock on Saturday - what a great bunch of 'real' supporters The Dale lads were. Good to have a laugh and a joke over a pint or two and I'm pleased the day was all you could have wanted. The plaque was a very nice touch

Let me know what you're doing for the rematch.

  • Glad to hear you had a good one TD.  I chatted to some of the Rochdale fans and they were a good bunch (I hadn't expected anything else, however, living not far away as I do).  Glad that we got the result to top off a good day out as well!

Can someone fill in if i'm wrong, but can anyone remember the great run of 12 wins on the bounce on our promotion to the premier and in game 13 we were top and played swindon who were bottom. at half time i believe that the proceeds of the half time draw were donated to the swindon youth team ,such was their financial plight. against the odds we went on to lose 1-0 unbelievably. to me that shows that our club, no matter where we are, will have a thought for those less fortunate. another reason to be a proud Addick.
