1960s Charlton - Cliff Myers, Fascinating Interview

edited September 2011 in General Charlton
Just completed a fascinating pre recorded interview with 60s Charlton midfielder Cliff Myers (now 65).

In an honest and indepth interview Cliff reveals the past-times he shared with his best friend Billy Bonds, how he lost his wedding ring on the Valley pitch during a game - then found it 2 weeks later thanks to Alan Campbell, what he was doing when Peter Croker came to his house to ask his father if he could sign for Charlton, his debut at Wolverhampton Wanderers and what he saw in the Evening Standard that same night, how Eddie Firmani rose to the challenge and showed amazing skill during a Valley training session and his memories of greats such as Len Glover, Brian Kinsey, Mike Bailey, John Hewie and many others. Cliff also reveals how he used to bunk onto The Valleys East Terrace before he signed for the club as a professional and gives his assessment of Chris Powell, the current team and whether the players honestly earn their wages in the modern game.

Interview will be broadcast this coming Sunday on www.charltonchoicetv.co.uk on the live show page from 7pm. If you cant listen live then the show will be available again throughout the week on the website from next Monday morning

  • Looking forward to hearing the interview.  Well done Choice'y, it's good to have the chance to reminisce and hear his memories of the era.

I think this was without one of my most enjoyable interviews to date, Cliff is a lovely genuine South Londoner and some of the great stories give you a real feel for what football was like in the 60s, his story about Eddie Firmani after about 25mins of the interview is great as is the way he elaborates on everything he talks about. If you were a child in that era then this is without doubt going to bring back some great memories.
  • Er, actually, as hinted at by Oggy, some of us are actually older than Cliff!! But no matter, it's good to hea the memories of people who played in  those days and who seemed to have a much closer relationship with the supporters than happens nowadays.

Sorry Sixer ....... thought you were younger than Henry.

Anyway, you are now officially elevated to the Old Gits Clique ......along with anyone who has actually seen Cliff Myers play.

    ;o)
  • does make me laugh at the amount of old stories you hear about people used to sneak into the valley. No bloody wonder the club was always skint. Might as well had saved some money and got rid of the turnstiles. ; )

I once got caught climbing over the wall near the Sam Bartram gate by a policeman in the late sixties and was promptly escorted back into the ground.
  • Yes, I think there was sometimes a queue of kids waiting to clamber in at the Bartram gate. Mind you, at Palarse they get done for climbing out!

  • March51

I'm afraid you didnt get CharltonPete's rather good joke....
  • Ah, sorry folks. That'll teach me to make an eary start!  : )

  • Not got the same emory as some, did he score the goal against Coventry in 1967 when they were promoted. I seem to remember a big mofo called George Curtis kicking us all over the place.

George Curtis, evil looking lump of a centrehalf - if it moved he kicked it.

Coventry City were managed by Jimmy Hill in those days, of course.
