Memories of Carlisle away

What memories have you got from our promotion game at Carlisle away.I remember saving up my paper round money for a month to pay for the train fare.Left Swanley at about 5.00 am 7.30 trian from Euston then a marathon journey up to Carlisle via many diversions because of engineering work. When we arrived at Carlisle sprayed on wall outside station CHARLTON MUST DIE 5TH MAY.Then as we were gettin police escort to the ground a mob of there boys followed on opposite side of the road, until we went past a boozer with about 200 Charlton inside, the noise from this boozer with the singin was deafening. The match itself 2-0 down very early on then the best own goal i have ever seen from near the halfway line via a post from Jim Tolmie.I know Mark Aizlewood scored I think our 3rd for a 3-2 victory who scored the second?Pitch invasion at end with Lennie hoisted on our fans shoulders, again their boys tried to come on pitch but were soon on their toes with the amount of Charlton there.Great walk back to the station for the longest journey ever home.Got home about 2.00 am.

  • Jim Tolmie. Enough said. Best OG ever.
  • Are we a bit old for this thread Large, don't know how many posters would have gone.
  • I didn't go, but remember it vivdly as I was a student in Holland at the time. Had fallen off my bike the night before (what happens when you try to cycle carrying two bottles of red wine when you've already drunk more than that...), so I was huddled bruised, concussed and feeling sorry for myself by the radio. They reported Carlisle going two up, then nothing else for ages and ages, in which time Portsmouth were banging the goals in, and I think won 4-0. On the radio they seemed to have decided we were as good as up, and the result didn't matter, but if I remember rightly Portsmouth could have overtaken us if they won and we didn't. I was getting more and more frustrated that they weren't giving our score - in the end it was a passing mention just before 5pm, at which point I forgot about my sore head! Life before the internet, eh?
  • I was there. We meet at the Yorkshire Grey at about 4am and my mates dad drove six of us up there in his Space Wagon. Checked into a B & B at about 10.30 and was in the pub at 11.00. I think it was the pub that you was referring to and by the time we headed off to the ground I was a bit the worse for wear. I vaguely remember the pub being attacked at some stage by a group of Carlisle fans because we'd taken over 'their' pub. To be honest, I don't remember much about the match coz I was so smashed. After the match I remember trying to get into the players bar only to have my way barred by a couple of nutters who wanted to fight me then having to get a cab back to the B & B because the Carlisle fans didn't take too kindly to the result. I believe the Carlisle fans were fighting with the Police to get at the Charlton fans on the way back to the station. Was going to go into the town in the evening but were 'advised' it was too dangerous so we opted to go out for a curry instead. Got back to London at about 3pm on the Sunday

We needed one point from either of the last two games, the problem being that the last game was going to be against Wimbledon who were also chasing promotion, so realistically it had to come against Carlisle to be sure.

My memory was similar...being a student and listening to R2's Final Score programme and hearing the scores be read out quickly as they do at that time and hearing something to the effect that Charlton had scored a late equaliser and were therefore promoted, the presenter went on to the next result and that was it, we were promoted but with no fanfare, I didn't even know we'd pulled a goal back after being two down so finding out we had a draw and the point we needed was a shock.
  • I thought we won 3-2 in the end??
