As we pondered this match at Preview Towers over a Kir Royale we wondered if it would be a case of the game that wasn't played.
Had not the moral fibre of this once great country collapsed to such an extent this tie would have already been completed and we'd be contesting a key league 1 game at MK Dons.
As it has, we will have to wait until 27th of this month. Meanwhile most of the league will try to sneak an early advantage. The Preview's teams pre-season tip for the top 6, Brentford, could go top with a win v Colchester while current leaders Sheffield Utd take on another unbeaten side, Huddersfield, in the first of six sure to be crucial Yorkshire derbies this season. The best we can do is go top (if the Blades lose by more than one goal and Brentford don't win), at worst we will revert to third.
But enough of the games we're not in.
In the last round Chris Powell rang the changes. According to Colin Cameron that was the only time in Charlton's history when we have played completely different starting XIs in consecutive matches.
CP was guarded as to whether he will do the same again but with a large and talented squad it seems likely. CP will want to give game time to those yet to feature or who have been mainly on the subs bench.
One factor to consider is what sort of team Preston will play. In the last round they saw off Crewe 3 - 2 with a full strength side so maybe tempted to do the same again especially as they are in good form. Friday's 4 - 3 TV win over Yeovil was the fourth in succession. Those wins may have come against some of the division's lesser lights but PNE are still 7th with a game in hand.
Manager Phil Brown has Neil Mellor to get him goals as well as the vastly experienced Graeme Alexander. Striker Iain Hume may or may not have been away on International duty with Canada so may or may not be rested.
For the Addicks Sullivan is almost certain to get a chance between the posts with Leon Cort making his début alongside Yado Mambo assuming the youngster hasn't gone out on loan by then. If so The Doc will no doubt step in. Francis and Evina would be obvious choices at FB if the Frenchman is fit and Simon hasn't left.
Upfront Benson's fingers may still keep him out leaving the door open for 6'4" striker Michael Smith to play alongside Jason Euell.
But it will be the midfield that will generate the most interest. Whisper it but Mikel Alonso could well make an appearance and so finally quash rumours of his non-existance. Alongside him Pritchard, Hughes, Bover or even Warren could get the nod. Danny Green has been ill but if his face is not still the same colour as his name he too could be involved.
Another spirited selling (or should that be loaning) plate display which will be enough to take the game to extra time and pens. Which we shall win.

Hopefully it'll be as good as the Reading game.
I'd certainly take another Reading performance, ideally rewarded with the sackful of goals that we deserved but didn't quite get against the Royals.
4-1 to Charlton, with Alonso turning in a mesmeric performance which leaves us all wondering how we can incorporate him into our already brilliant first eleven.
Phil Brown was at Saturdays game, so I fully expect Chrissy to upset Brown's plans and go with the Reading squad. I'm looking forward to it hugely and would just love to see Brown's brow darken and furrow. I reckon we can sneak a win, but Alexander will be a real handful.

Henry Irving in rogue apostrophe scandal. Must be the Kir Royale.
Preston are in form so I can see a draw in normal time with Benson getting the winner in the 116th minute.
Thought he came on as a sub for Preston on Friday.
Sorry!
Actually, while I'm online I must add pedantry to the hobbies thread.
No full stop?
Okay, I'm going now.
Someone else can do the Rochdale profile now. Stubley Addick will do.
