Owl's Eye View

edited September 2011 in General Charlton
Quite long but often very funny, as well as very revealing about how we are seen, both on the night and generally.

Comments

  • Skipped a lot but some good insight on the game and the team tactics
  • "what I had here was soup in a pastry bowl with a handy lid"

Don't you just hate it when that happens?
  • I remember reading one of his pieces before, a right good read that!
  • yes but he talks totak bo***cks
  • Ah! fab stuff..

I thought his comments about us on Monday were on the money, unfortunately

Deceptively well written. Proper football fans, the like of which the Premiershit seems to have forgotten.

Little memo for Chris Powell though.
    "I hear
Chris Powell thinks we simply played hoofball…well if that’s true how
come Rob Jones, our 25ft tall centre half was the only one doing any
heading in that last 30 mins? And he never stopped…If Charlton played
good passing football with the ball on the deck then he aint gonna do
that and what’s more, they’re gonna make him look shit because he has
the turning circle of a wardrobe…a 40ft high wardrobe
    .

    Chris
Powell, who I have a lot of time for, needs to look at his own team
when it comes to hoofing and he also needs to realise they were at home
and shoulda been taking the game to us more than they did. They made it
    easy for us
    .

We worked hard across the middle, stood strong at the back…and that’s why THEY hoofed it."

  • I enjoyed reading it and thought it was pretty much spot on.

i don't think judging how a team will get on from one game is spot on. Mark my words, we will be littered with comments about how opposing fans didn't think we re that much, predicting we will get nowhere near the automatics. But when it is clear that we are the stand out team they will change their tune. It's jealousy basically. Not saying we played well on Monday but i'm judging us on what we have shown in all our games, not one where a big team tried to stop us with some success and had one lucky chance the whole game. I thought it was sad Wednesady tried to spoil the game as I always felt it was us trying to play the football.

  • Well Muttley it was the first time I'd seen this team and for sure I could see big and heartening differences between this team and last season's. Bu the football from us all came in the first half. Sheffield Wednesday did not come to entertain us, they came for a point and got it. Dale Stephens, about whom I'd heard much, was anonymous in the second half, and we were playing hoofball, as many of us have already acknowledged.
I am delighted with 14 points from 6 games, I'm delighted with all the signings, including Jason Euell, and we are actually well ahead of my highest expectations. What we saw on Monday, and what this guy's comments show, is that we are a work in progress. If we accept that, we'll be better able to take the inevitable setbacks, and we'll be able to accept reasonable comments from rival fans.
  • Mutt, on the basis of that game, which is what he's basing his article on, he's correct.  Get the sand out of your vagina. Like PA I'm equally confident that we've started well and the team and manager can do better than was shown on Monday.  It's pathetic to whine about other teams spoiling the game, particularly when we've spent the whole match trying to batter the ball at the head of a lampost of centre half who I first spotted was dreadful on the deck about 10 years ago when he was doing a comedy turn for hibs.  Objectivity doesn't hurt.

you make it sound like we've been amazing this season. Yes Bournemouth and Col U were comfortable wins. Notts County we were shaky until the end. Scunthorpe a point was the most we deserved. Monday night we were pretty dire. At Bury we sounded very average first half.

People are getting stupidly carried away unless I've been watching a different team.

  • Good report from a true football fans veiw and I am afraid to say he is spot on with his "hoofball" comments. Their giant at the back won everything in the air, they must have been laughing at us.

I hope Chris Powell has learnt from this because he still seems nieve when it comes to certain tactics and it will cost us in the long run

  • There's not too much to argue with if you look at that game in isolation.
  • Maybe- was just toatally p***sed off with th e way a team that is supposed to be the biggest in the Division set up. Equally p***sed off that some of their fans seem to take pleasure from it- I would be embaressed if we did the same in League One. Agree we didn't deal with it in the 2nd half but I'm still very confident and looking at teams in isolation is what I object to.
  • The Truth hurts sometimes, a fair and balanced report.

But one of the most interesting things he wrote is that in their eyes it is US that is "the biggest in the Division". I thought that is very revealing, and will influence how other clubs and their fans approach games with us.

How many of us realised that we are seen as the Man City of League One?

Well we do have a City fan as a Chairman

I think Sheff Wed got my goat on Monday - I need to chill out - do think they shouldn't get any credit at all for their negativity and I'll just look forward to stuffing them at theirs

  • See where you're coming from muttley but is the way they played any worse than our own style of play over the last couple of seasons?  An episode of Jeremy Kyle seemed more entertaining than most of our matches last season.
  • Biggest load of self indulgent nonsense ever, and he's probably about as 'chuffin' Yorkshire as Parkinson. As a Tyke friend said to me on Mon 'the dee da's are k'heads.'
