Our Subs Bench

edited September 2011 in General Charlton
Looking at last nights 5 on the bench I couldnt see anyone who could come on to swing the game back into our favor. I know we have strength in depth now so it's not a major problem.

The 5 sub rule also don't help but every team has to deal with that & green being out was just one of those things we can't help

I'd change 3 of the subs bench from last night who could come on and offer something different.

I'd keep Sullivan as I wouldn't risk leaving a keeper off the bench.
I'd keep Cort on for centre back cover incase of injuries to the other CB's
I'd replace Euell,Hughes & Pritchard. With Benson, Evina & Green/Waggy (who ever isn't in starting 11)

I can't believe benno's not making the 5 tbh

Who would be your 5 on the bench?

  • With half an hour to go I looked at the bench and just thought that there was nobody there I'd want to bring on. We sorely missed Benno and Green tonight.

    Sullivan
    Cort
    Pritchard
    Green/Wagstaff
    Benson
  • Is Benno still injured? Didn't he get taken off in the cup game?
  • Cort, Evina, Benson, Waggy/Green, an other striker.

I would add that I couldn't believe Pritchard didn't get a run last night and hope that he does enough against Palace today to really challenge to get on the bench at least.

  • Benson
    Green
    Pritchard
    Cort
    Hughes
Taylor can cover in goal and with 3 midfield on the bench no need for Euell for midfield cover.

Maybe but I'm sure he wasn't making the bench before his injury. Could be wrong??
  • I'm hoping Alonso is fit quickly as he is probably going to be the alternative to Stephens/Hollands
  • if we have lost 2 subs as a result of the new rule then unfortunately you end up needing to pick players who can play in more than one position - so Hughes gets on the bench ahead of Evina
If Green plays then Waggy as he can play either wing. Cort as he isn't Doherty !!!
Euell as ... well there isn't anyone else and he might be able to play centre mid if required
    Plus Sullivan of course

Shocking rule change though ... haven't read up top see why it was changed but we are suffering as a result
  • Benno and Green (or Waggy) must (at least) be on the bench
  • Don't agree with everyone moaning on about "only 5 subs".

More subs favours the big money teams with larger squads and last night we only used 1 sub even though we were chasing a key game at home. It just means coaches have to use a bit of intelligence or take a risk or two.

In the good old days there were no substitutes.

    Just ask Sir Keith Peacock.
  • The 3 from 5 rule has put more value on the utility player at the expense of the 'specialist'. I suspect managers will be unadventurous as to their bench selections in an attempt to cover as many injury or tactical changes as possible. Water under the bridge but i feel that if Benson had been brought on last night, that we would have won .. He may still be injured but if Benson is a 'victim' of utilitarianism, that is a pity. My five would be: (I would have Green and Benson starting): Sullivan, Mambo, Pritchard, Hayes and Wagstaff

I agree somewhat with that Grumpy but if we had 7 subs then maybe we could have named a winger and 2 strikers. As 3 of our unused subs were defenders and a keeper there wasn't that much that CP could have done
But he should have used Pritchard ...

Agreed- but the manager picks the bench. We could have 5 strikers or 5 wingers on the bench if Chris wanted them.
Having seen Hughes against Reading I am not sure what option he gives us other than his rigorous 40 minute warm up routine which is very entertaining for those in the NW Quad.
  • need to have at least one striker on the bench. Green was ill last night otherwise he would have made it. At home I'd have Pritchard over Hughes. If everyone was fit I'd go with

    Sullivan, Cort, Green, Pritchard, Benson

as said Pritchard should have come on last night

need a loan striker as soon as window re-opens

Surely if fit Green would have started ?

Well if Hughes can play in either full back role (so I'm told) and as a holding midfielder then I'd put him on the bench ahead of Evina

Does anyone know if we have to name a keeper as part of the 5 ?

Is Steve Brown still about ???
  • I've done this to death on the other "new 5 sub" thread but, statistically, with a non injury prone keeper in the starting X1, it makes far more sense to have an attacking player on the bench instead.

    I would have:

    Centre back
    Central Midfielder
    Winger
    Forward
    Forward

No FB as we do have JJ in the team so if a FB gets injured he can always drop back.

We should utilise the fact that we do have a stronger squad than most of the other teams in our division and having a keeper when, in all likelihood, he isn't going to be needed more than once a season, is a waste of resources.
  • Re Hughes, we have players on the pitch that can play on his positions as well as there own. Hughes can play centre mid so can jackson
Hughes can play right back so can morrisson
Hughes can play left back so can jackson
Nothing against Hughes as I haven't seen him yet but I think someone else should be taking his seat (benno, evina etc) We have utility players on the pitch so dont need him on the bench
  • Benson would certainly have posed more of a threat from the bench last night if he was fit - and if he's not still being offloaded when the loan window opens. As trhings turned out Wednesday probably had the better of the second half without really threatening apart from set pieces, but even before ko the bench looked a bit impotent without Green & Benson. Guess Pritchard may have been kept back as Weds were quite physical but we really didn't have a "game-changer" to throw on.

Forgot about JJ  !!! - he can play anywhere !!! ... good shout

If we are looking to win most games then maybe we can get away with having a keeper, a CB plus 3 attacking options (winger and 2 CFs)

    Sullivan
    Cort
    Waggy/Pritchard
    Benson
    Euell
  • Don't see the need to have a goalie on the bench, how often do you actually need to sub a keeper??

  • I see no point in having a big squad then ignoring them . Huges needs to be off the bench and replaced by Evina who will provide defensive cover and can play left wing with JJ moving into the centre if nesscessary. Benno has to be on the bench for pace and given good service( not from Waggy) ,will score goals. Euell doesnt need to be there as Evina and perhaps Waggy or Alonso will provide plenty of options. So for me the bench would be

    Sullivan

    Cort ...for CB cover

Evina ...full back and Left mid cover

Waggy...right mid and forward cover...Of course Green needs to be fit and starting for this ...otherwise Pritchard

    Benno....He's a finisher given service

Alonso ( when fit)..if not then Pritchard or Bover to provide centre mid cover

It is also puzzling when we have A BIG SQUAD and then our striker picks up a knock , BWP for the Bury game, why then do we not dig into that squad and play a striker in his place instead of a makeshift striker???We got away with it and won the game BUT this will not always be the case.. Now we have the squad ,use it correctly lest the wrong messages get sent to the players. Also ,can't we have an injury section on the website so we know whos out and an approximate return date. This would be useful me tinks..

Agree with this but, as I keep saying, we need to ditch the keeper option. Otherwise, we are breaking the rules with six subs :-)
  • This was my subs bench aswell. Minus alonso who is your 6th sub. With Evina providing cover for LB & LM jacko can play CM if need be. benno can come on up top with green crossing into the box we will score more and win more using a subs bench like this rather than last nights

Euell can't come on to play up top. His a midfielder. He can come on to play behind a striker but not as a main striker.
  • Dont put a goalie on the bench...  If in the event Hamer does take a knock, then Matt taylor can fill in for temp and we can put Cort in at CB. This will enable us to use Benson AND Euell on the bench. OR a loan striker and one of them too when the loan window opens.
  • God knows what they did years ago when there was only 1 sub !!!

David Fairclough made his name as a "super-sub"  - these days he wouldn't get a chance...........

I've been thinking about the makeup of the bench too .......it's clearly set out to hold on to what we already have.

Powelly always says that he primes the team beforehand to ".......go out and win every match" and (apart from last night) in every game so far, we have been leading with 20 minutes left - which implies that Powell expects the team to go into the last quarter holding a lead.

The subs bench is primarily selected to hold that lead. Hughes in particular is valuable in that respect - not only is he defensive full back cover, but he can close the game down in midfield. Don't underestimate why he's in the squad - gritty determination, character and experience. It's what's needed to see through the last 10 when under the cosh physically.

Last night, we needed something different - a bit of guile, fresh energy and enthusiasm. Only Pritchard of last night's bench seems to offer that.

My pick would be Evina, who can play intelligently in several positions with good touch and pace.
Pace against a tiring team can make all the difference.

  • I once asked Curbs at a Q&A how he saw the use of subs, ie....as a way of replacing injured players or a way of changing a game. He aswered more in the negative rathger than positive and I feel CP has the same mentality.

last nights experienced manger had no problem changing things after just 20 mins to change the game - the in-experienced manager used just 1 sub with 12 mins reamining and it didn't change anything.

  • Not surprising really, Golfie ....... Alan Cautiously is one of Powell's mentors, and considering Powell himself was one of the cornerstones of his teams for many seasons, it's not surprising that a little of Curbs' safety-first mentality has rubbed off on him.
  • and Curbs was there last night to advise him ;-)
  • Let me see.

Curbs' record of sucess v Megson's record of success

I think Curbs might just edge that one by a few miles.
