No plan B

edited September 2011 in General Charlton
We don't seem to have a plan b when things are not going right and we don't have any options to turn to on the bench Jason euell is not the answer looks to slow

We seem to just start lumping it up the field and hoping

  • We need to start putting Benson on the bench, scrapping having a keeper and if the keeper gets injured/sent off he can be replayed by taylor as people have said he started as a GK (that's right yes) plus the points we would win from that would be far greater than the points lost from not having a keeper on the bench. Having Green out too didn't help anyone

  • Agreed, If we are going to play this kind of football, Powell should have brought In the right kind of players for it, BIG Lumps upfront. Better record away from home at the moment. Could all change next week, need to give Exeter a bashing.
  • Keep the faith.  Agree we need more attacking options from the bench, but sure Chrissie will work that out too.

That was the big difference tonight - they had two centre forwards on bench and used them both.

Why were we so slow getting forward at times? Also sat back for nearly 20mins and we're at home. Set pieces needs to be addressed attacking but especially defending them, we've had two seasons of poor defending from corners/freekicks getting fed up with it.

1-1 still unbeaten but would have liked a better performance, time to have a look at our second string players i think.

  • If Green wasn't injured then I cannot understand his not being on the bench. 100% need to get another striker in to offer something different. Waggy worked really hard first half but his end product was poor. Had Green played in think we would have delivered better quality into danger areas and I think would have sewn it up by halftime. No panic but Green needs to start.

Green is ill with a virus.
  • Sheff wed stiffled us the learnt early on how quick we switch the ball, they moved closer on to the 2nd pass they anticipated where the ball would go and got there early

too many players off par subs not made early enough but That was a tough fixture bar poor finishing from jacko and a misplaced header and ity was 3 points

i aint worried 1 little bit

  • Maybe CP doesn't really like Plan B, I don't much care for him.
  • Plam B was obviously that CAFC would resort back to plan A which worked a treat first half
  • Didn't go but reading between the lines, clearly Megson got his team to do a job on us in midfield in the second half which stifled our passing game and left us with the lump forward option.

Our team is a work in progress and we need to learn to deal with that. Maybe with Green fit, that could have been the difference.

  • We can't keep going on with no striker on the bench, Euell is not an impact player from the bench and we should have either Benson or the new lad Smith on the bench.

My preference is for Smith as he is a big lump and might win a few penalty box headers and create something, I see Benno as a straight swap for BWP.

  • We don't need both Hughes and Euell on the bench and after last nights showing I'd struggle to form a case for Euell, he was anonymous when he came on, Benson surely is plan B at the moment

Seriously believe that Smith is one for the future,a fifth choice striker.  I hope we can bring someone decent in on loan.  That said I did not think Hayes was as bad as some say.  he seems to do a lot right but then mucks up something simple.

Midfield was the problem, lacking energy and creativity after the first half and was crying out for a change,if Euell was to be used then he should have replaced Stephens
  • Rather than drop Sullivan bench should be Sullivan, Cort, Waggy or Green (Pritchard/Alonso), Euell and Benno.
  • I dunno, I think Powell had a choice between bringing Pritchard in against an experienced spoiling midfield or bringing experience up front at a time when we were punting it and not getting it down.  With hindsight, he might have brought Pritchard in for Hayes and played BWP as a lone striker with support from the flanks to try to change the tide, but Euell is a lot more mobile and quicker than Hayes and it was an understandable change. He might also have dropped Euell a little deeper to give Jones something to think about and add a bit more to midfield.
  • really no idea why Euell is preferred to Benson, made no impact whatsoever
  • I posted this on the PostMatch thread
Started well, good finish by BWP, first 15 ours, then Smegson put 5 in midfield then Prutton and to a lesser degree Semedo took charge, Dale and Holland sat too deep and we hoofed it upfield, their CB's won everyheader. God love Chris Powell, but he is tactically naive IMO. Semedo got booked as did Prutton. Powell should have brought Pritchard on and gone 451 and played football through the midfield, they had 2 midfielders on yellows this should have been exploited, I cant remember one effective/positive run that Stephens or JJ had from midfield in the second half. Wiggins was weak, I'm not convinced about him, Hamer looked flappy. Pissed off with a point and I'm sure Powell is working on his tactical ability.
  • Euell shouldn't be anywhere near the bench. Can't play wide right or left and certainly not a striker. Can't get on there as a midfielder as we have better options. Looking like an old pals act to me and the only mistake CP has made over the summer.
  • I think the ideal thing last night would have been to move to 451, but with a more mobile player in the hole - Waggy or Pritch.  Maybe if Green had been fit there'd have been a different ethos, but we need to adapt to situations better.  Jones is a pretty poor player imo, but rock solid at dealing with high balls which should have been apparent early on.

Have to agree with this , I'm afraid.

Is Benno injured or about to be loaned out somewhere ? Either way we need another striker option for the bench.

  • He's there to link up play to the front man.  Not really Benno's game, as the ball doesn't exactly stick to him.
  • Isn't Benno out with fractured fingers?
  • We needed a pacey striker to come on last night and allow us to change our style of play. Sadly, we don't have a pacey striker as yet. :(
  • I think he's playing George Carter in the new Sweeney film.
  • Waggy worked really hard first half but his end product was poor. Had Green played in think we would have delivered better quality into danger areas and I think would have sewn it up by halftime. No panic but Green needs to start.
Agreed - think Waggy is a top player but Danny Green would have been a bigger treat
  • God love it!  Powell tactically naive.  There are some managers you can say that about, but really just watching him play told you tactically he was all there.  I love to analyse games tactically, and some managers such as Pardew who manage to miss the most glaring issues, we can dare to criticise from a platform of self-believed superiority.

Sheffield started with 4-5-1, then brought Lowe on presumably to play up front and drop into the hole when needed.  The first half was difficult to read tactically.  Making your phases pay win matches.  Very few teams bar the top, top ones dominate 70-80% of the match.  The first 25 we pressed, dominated, and passed the ball quickly.  Threatening but not really ever getting close to scoring.  Stephens's chance had good approach play but the best posiible  ball was less likely to lead to a gall, rather than the deflection that made the chance.  Sheffield Wednesday in their phases even with better possession, didn't look like creating a chance.

As everyone goes on about we look weak at defending set pieces.  We don't seem to have an agressive header of the ball, who trys to cut out every cross with a physically dominating leap.  Hayes looks a good addition, and with a defence turning looks to be a factor.  But he doesn't operate inbetween defensive channels.  I don't think we played too deep at times, but having a diagonal ball that Benson offers for a midfielder can bring JJ and Waggy in more often.  A more direct threat on their full back, with a cross inside or out would have offered Hayes the service needed.  Personally all through the match I thought we were high enough to get on their right full back.  Whereas on Buxton the space was between him and the rcd, one where we were too deep for JJ and his pace to threaten.

We don't appear to have an MVP like Grant Holt of a few seasons ago.  But we do appear a capable squad.  Much as I like Waggy it points to Green coming in sooner than later.  And if Cort is that physically more aggressive header, then him coming in quickly depending on fitness.  Waggy's great to have on the bench, and if JJ needs a rest should be more effective coming inside on the left and getting shots off.
