I had the pleasure of taking my grandson Mortimer to the Scunthorpe match last week and it was a pleasure to see Charlton playing football again. Mortimer (he's only 7) asked near the end of the match who the old boy was taking the place of a young striker. I told him it was a Mr Doherty who was a defender. He then asked what was wrong with his legs as they didn't seem to be working very quickly and grandma could probably run faster than him. I mentioned that he had been playing football for a long time and his shuffle was probably due to lots of old injuries. He asked why a defender had been brought on and I said it was to make sure everyone knew we were going to defend our slender 1 goal lead. Mortimer asked wouldn't Scunthorpe realise that and attack more? I said that the manager Mr Powell knew what he was doing and I had every confidence in him. At the end of the match Mortimer asked if we could watch another match soon when maybe old people were not invited to join in a young man's game. What do I say to him?

Send a letter to Mr Doherty c/o CAFC.
Be honest ie tell the story above and politely ask if Gary would consider immediate retirement once he has had a chance to digest the letter. Point out that if he doesn't retire, then he is soley responsible for potentially endangering the sale of a future season ticket to Mortimer.
Did Mortimer also comment on the height of any of our players?
That said Doc is one season away from a zimmer!
The Doc warmed up at half time against Bournemouth jogging accross the pitch doing the high kick with the rest of players he barely reach shin height.
Other exercises he jacked in.
Me and old man we laughing it was so pathetic he looked like a sunday morning player warming up and i seen them do better
He may be slower than most, but he reads the game very well and will always put in 100% effort.
I Think it is great to have him in our squad.
I like the idea of keeping / protecting possession and delaying play of the ball at the corner flag when its our corner with only 9 minutes left on the clock.
I can't wait to try it out.
As for Mortimer, give great attention to his education, he is a bright boy.
But what we really want to know is young Mortimer's view.
Apart from his dictatorial views on sartorial matters and being perhaps a tad precocious, he really cuts the mustard with his match analysis.
I am guesssing young Mortimer isnt yet tall enough for his German school team?
Its good you havent introduced him to this site as it seems there is a consensus that only tall players should be considered for Charlton, something Sir Clive Mendonca Johnny Robinson and Chris Powell told me in reverie just wasnt true.
My advice FWLIW, let him go out on loan to SCP (spooky) - we could all do with a second favourite team, especially if it is abroad and not a direct competitor.
I will miss his astute analysis and eagerly await the post Carlisle report
Saw this thread for the first time, very enjoyable. Thanks Mr DaveDave,
Have you thought about signing Mortimer up for Young Addicks? Assuming Greman and British half terms are the same he could get the chance to quiz Sir Christopher on his sartorial choices.
