Getting Good Transfer Fees For Our Players?

I like lots of other people have been impressed with how much has been done by our new owners in terms of squad strengthening ,( in a short space of time)  and also good decison making as well.

I am pleased that we dismissed the 100k offer for Robbie even though he is in the last year of his contract , he still is a quality act , although some would disagree and say he is a working progress.

My beef is ( not with this board) is generally speaking why are we not able to command the sort of transfer fees that Southampton have been able to command in recent years?

I know beggars can't be choosers , and perhaps in the past we have just had to sell to survive / reduce debts , i know we are in a lot stronger position (hopefully!) than in the past but i hope going forward in the future we are able to get some of the 'silly ' fees for players that Southampton have enjoyed , as hopefully it will give us an even bigger transfer budget to play with.

I'm sure lots of you will disagree with me , but what do you think?

  • Fair enough question but at least with Parker and then Bent we held firm until we were happy with the fees, when for years before we felt bullied as fans watching young assets go for peanuts. With the two above we were able to bargain from a position of relative strength, especially with Bent who conducted himself so well and never demanded a move. Many outside Charlton felt his fee was astronomical at the time. When all's said and done it comes down to how much someone's willing to pay and you just have to hope you're selling to someone like Ridsdale.

I think we need 'better looking boys' for wenger.....No joking aside southampton got great fee's for Walcot and oxdale-chamberlen because they were both majorly hyped as the next best thing - and in fairness they do offer something defferent and with the right coaching could both be great great players.

We don't work that way though, our youth are nutured into the first team not super hyped form the age of 10/11 yrs old in the aim to sell them at 17 once they've got half a season under their belts. Also we haven't produced players of that calibre - doesn't mean we won't and i'm not knocking some of our more talented youth or our youth system as I really think it will benefit the club massively over the coming years, we've got numorous england school boys and international jnr captains and players which offer something different.

  • You can only sell for high prices if someone is willing to pay those high prices.

Take Elliott for instance - We may value him at £500k, but if we only get offers of £100k, we either don't sell or we drop the price. It's just like buying an MP3 player - Southampton's players are the overhyped Apple iPods, whilst ours are the cheaper generic products.

    Excellent answers everyone

Any ideas on How we get some over hyped 'Apple Ipods ' to sell on at exhorbatant prices?

Do we need to recruit / market ourselves differently?
  • To be fair Walcott and Gareth Bale have proved to be very good players. Parker and Bent we got decent money for. I don't thinik we have done all that bad with the sales, I just don;'t think we have had as good players as Southampton.
  • I think we got stitched up for the Shelvey deal.

Fair comment , but how do we get our academy producing the next big thing and flogging them on for plenty of dosh? it obviously can be done.

I've always thought Charlton sell their players too cheap , particularly their youngsters, i wouldn't mind negotiating transfer fees for our youth players.

If we did, then it is no more so than when Robert Lee left, we needed the money to survive, so Liverpool were able to capitalize on our situation, not a stitch up more negotiation from a position of strength.
  • Southampton have less club compition for local youngsters. Portsmouth that's about it but we have numerous big clubs in London to compete with for youngsters in London and home counties.
  • I'm sure if we had 'Laughed off' the 3m bid for Shelvey we could have held out for a bit more but to be honest I think the club were a bit too nice and let Shelvey have his big move. I'm sure if Parker wasn't such a prick when he left and maybe if we'd waited until the summer they might have let him have his big move without standing in his way too much. Southampton are just selfish bastards.
