The 'Robins Club' in the early '70s.

edited August 2011 in General Charlton
A mention on the 'First Game' thread of a Sunday game (v. Shrewsbury Town) in the '70s rang a bell. I think that to avoid the Sunday observancey laws you had to enrol in the 'Robins Club' at the turnstile and you were given a membership card which allowed you access to the ground. Also, were these games being played on Sundays because of the power cuts caused by the three day week? I think you had to re-enrol in the Club for each individual game. Anyone else remember this?

  • I reckon you're correct & remember the Shrewsbury game, think it may of have been our 1st Sunday game.
  • yes. You could not pay to watch a game on a Sunday but you could become a member of a club (for the same price as gate admission) and they then let you in for free. Dont think you got a card - more a small peice of paper.
  • Thanks chaps, knew I hadn't imagined it. I'll have a poke around amongst the old programmes and cuttings Mrs.M is always threatening to chuck out: might still be one of these membership things buried away in it.
