Yep did really well for them. On another day he would've buried both his chances and we'd be singing his praises. Nice to see us having two strikers for once who seem to be constantly getting into positions where they look like scoring
Think people have made a bit too much of the Docherty substitution. It was either 89 or 90th minute and we had been sitting way too deep long before Docherty came on. I didn't see a problem with taking BWP off that late on but, for me, it would've been Hughes coming on instead as Stephens and Hollands were looking leggy and could've done with some help.
Great article- some very well made points. At the start of the season, I would have been keen to start Benson- but Hayes and BWP have linked up very impressively. Benson should be on the bench at the very least. I cannot believe that the Green/ Benson link-up is being overlooked, in favour of Euell.
Your perfectly entitled to your opinion Bob, however I think its a bit much to criticise Powell the first time we drop a couple of points, the tactics he employed worked against Notts C, if they had worked on Saturday what would you have moaned about and yes it is natural for players to take a step back when defending a lead.
What would I have moaned about ? Well I would have had the same opinions as expressed in my opening thread, whether tactical decisions work or not I'm entitled to have an opinion the same as you .... however I'm not sure that it is natural to take a step back when defending a lead. We didn't seem to take a step back at 1-0? Taking your strikers off gives the opposition the opportunity to push forward & put our defence under more pressure, thats when we start taking a step back. Possibly the managers tactical decisions sends out the message to players that we shouldn't continue putting the opposition under pressure but we should just sit back & defend. Even if it was the correct thing to do (I don't think it was) Doherty (as well as the rest of the team) was poor last season & I wouldn't put my trust in him to defend a lead unless one of the other CBs was injured...but thats just my opinion !
Definitely do not need a pacey young striker alongside BWP. Remember how poor the whole team were when we played BWP and Eccleston together? In Austin and Paynter Swindon had two big strikers.
After Saturday I'm still convinced we need a big strong targetman. Not to hoof it up to, but to offer something different. Hayes like Burton can offer a good touch and link the play well, but he's not always going go have a good game. A more physical striker (Hayes is not a "big lump" type striker) would have challenged a lot better for headers the times we did go long (eg from Elliot) and when the ball was at his feet might have held off defenders and kept the ball. A proper targetman would also be ideal for getting on the end of crosses.
Currently we can use Wagstaff up front to add pace, energy and a goal threat. If we need to add a real physical presence we have no one. A targetman coming on for Hayes on Saturday could have helped us win the game.
As bizzarre as it might seem i think we need a workhorse like Heskey or say a Morrison who was at Millwall (i a ccept we won't get either of those) - somebody who will be a presence and a nuisance - a traditional target man like Steve Howard is going to be too static - a bit like Hayes. We needed an outlet although ideally we'll bring in both
The point is that the players are not trained to take a step back or told to do so by the manager and that most do (not just Charlton). It is something for the coaching staff to work on.

Yes fair enough but you must agree if we take off both our strikers it hands the initiative to the opposition. Everybody has been saying how we've defended from the front with BWP & Hayes working hard at closing defenders down, once you take that away they are no longer under pressure at the back & can push more men forward into danger areas.
But we were sitting back before he took BWP off - I personally wouldn't have brought Doc on but hindsight is a wonderful thing and as it turned out I don't think it made a lot of difference to the outcome. Doc wasn't to blame for the goal.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Morrison's mistake for the first goal - standing there gormlessly putting his hand up instead of trying to tackle their striker. I will never understand players who spend more time complaining to the ref than playing football. Nicky Bailey used to do the same from time to time and it always annoyed me.

As the man standing watching a yard away from the goal scorer, I would say Doherty is to blame for not getting a challenge in. Truth is his reactions are too slow & he should be watching from the stands by now as a 5th choice CB
