Konopka on trial with Charlton
February 6, 2007
Former Providence College goalkeeper, Chris Konopka, is currently in London for a trial with esteemed English Premier League side, Charlton Athletic. The 6’5", 215lb netminder was a guest of the Addicks on Saturday afternoon as Charlton hosted Chelsea at The Valley.
Konopka is expected to work out with the Addicks’ first-team squad under the watchful eyes of manager, Alan Pardew, and goalkeeper coach, Mike Kelly.
The trial was arranged by Konopka’s agent, Patrick McCabe, and follows on the heels of a previoys trial with Cardiff City, who are expected to extend an open invitation to Konopka to return to the Welsh side once his Polish passport is approved.
On 18 January, Konopka became the first player ever in Providence history to be drafted by an MLS team when he was selected by the Kansas City Wizards in the 3rd round of the Supplemental Draft.
During his career with the Friars, Konopka amassed some impressive statistics, including 4,377 career minutes, 57 goals allowed, a 1.17 career goals against average, 199 career saves, a career save percentage of 77.7%, a dozen shut-outs and an overall record of 18-18-11.
Bit worrying that he was only selected for The Wizards in the 3rd Round of the Supplemental Draft.
